Hi all

I have been out of the loop a while when it comes to tech. Its been around 6 years since I built my current rig but I am looking at making a few cheap upgrades.

I primarily use my PC for gaming and web browsing. I mostly play Quake 3 and have recently started playing Tribes Ascend. I do play other games as well and recent titles have been Skyrim, Dead Space 2, Borderlands, Deus Ex HR and so on and so forth.

Up until now my rig has performed as I needed it but since starting Tribes, I need more FPS!

My current spec is:

Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4Ghz)
Asus P5N32-E SLI mobo
2gb of Corsair XMS DDR2 RAM
Nvidia 8800 GTS (640mb)
Corsair HX620W Modular PSU
Windows Vista 32
Antec BFG900 Case

Theres a couple of problems, the first being my low budget and the second being my dated motherboard (and the fact its geared towards nvidia cards).

From what I can see the HD Radeon cards offer the most bang for buck, but I am wondering if the bus speeds that my mobo supports will create bottle necks, and also whether I am likely to see lower performance as the mobo is geared towards nvidia cards? (Motherboard spec page is HERE)

The expansion slot details are:

2 x PCIe x16 , support NVIDIA® SLI™ technology, at full x16, x16 speed (blue). x8 speed (white)
1 x PCIe x1
2 x PCI 2.2

Ideally I want to spend no more than £100 but get a good performance increase over my current graphics card.

Is that a realistic expectation?

I should mention that I am not interested in 2nd hand cards either (been there, done that).

I have also just invested in a SSD drive to help with data transfer etc.

How much of a performace increase will I see from todays budget cards over my old 8800 GTS?

I dont want to set the world alight, but I can only get around 30-35 FPS from Tribes on 800x600 resolution and all settings on low (including heavy tweaking of the tribes.ini file to further improve FPS!) :(

I want to try and get it to a steady 60+ if possible, but more the better to be honest. If I can get it to run at 80 I will be well chuffed.

Any advice will be welcome :)

Cheers

Buff

Says there's 1 in stock still. You could give them a ring or check back later. There's currently no decent sub 100 GPu on the site atm with no 6850s in stock so I'd go 2nd hand if you can't get that 6770.
