My daughter's Motherboard recently died and I'm looking for the the cheapest/value performance CPU/MB combo I can get? The CPU was a bit flaky too so I want to replace that as well. I'm hoping to do this for under £100 as I spent the majority of my cash on an i7 build not too long ago!

Here's what we had before:
AMD Athlon 7850 Dual-Core 2.80 Ghz
Gigabyte motherboard m61pme-s2

Fairly old hat so I'm hoping we can eclipse that now and get some more bang for our buck. Would the Trinity Dual-Core see us right?

1 x AMD Athlon X4 740 3.20GHz (Socket FM2) Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD740XWOHJBOX) £53.99
1 x MSI A55M-E33 AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £40.99
Total : £104.88 (includes shipping : £8.25).

1 x AMD A6-5400K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Dual Core Processor (AD540KOKHJBOX) £49.99
1 x MSI A55M-E33 AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £40.99
Total : £100.88 (includes shipping : £8.25).

1 x MSI A55M-E33 AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £40.99
1 x AMD A4-5300 3.40GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Dual Core Processor (AD5300OKHJBOX) £35.99
Total : £86.88 (includes shipping : £8.25).

for me any would do, top being better / faster then goes down in power as you go down, until last one is dual core, other 2 are quad :) enjoy

That was fast. :) I get free shipping so the top choice seems to fit the bill. I'd be interested in finding out more about that motherboard in the 2nd post.

Edit: 1600 on the clocks is a little too low as she games a bit. I'll stick with the #1 on the first response. Thanks.

£4.88 extra and you get free shipping so less for you, you can't go wrong, what ram you got as trinity likes it fast :) to get the best out of it, but any will do mind you

a6 might be a better choice, DDR3-2133 Support and better video etc

with top one only supports DDR3-1866 support

mobo yes, i was saying chip as i dont no what ram he is going to use and guess with what he's used in the past with cpu and m/b etc and games, he already has a card as well, but nothing mentioned in post.

so guessing :)

but i'd still go for the a6 myself like i said above, m/b was just to get in budget, and tbh low end wouldn't really have 2133 memory would it all ready as old m/b and chip wouldn't support it really, was just mentioning that the chip supports it etc

:)

Doesn't have APU!

Mobo only does 1866!

Does the OP's daughter have a GPU in her PC? If so the AMD Athlon X4 740 3.20GHz is just an APU without the GPU enabled.

Its this CPU without the GPU AMD A8-5500 3.20GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD5500OKHJBOX)

so either first or second build will be fine then, its upto you if you want dual core or quad, the links i gave you tell you what to see speed wise on both, for me choice and price, now you have a card, i'd go quad myself

does it have to be AMD?

Intel option could be a H61 1155 Intel board for £40 leaving £60 for a Pentium G860 3Ghz Dual Core

The Athlon 740 gets a passmark score of 4110, The G860 gets 2900.

As I doubt the PC will be upgraded, the Athlon 740 would be a better choice.
