Ive been out of the scene for quite a while now but have just got a 2500k system which has a budget motherboard. It seems like a crime not to overclock the cpu a bit so I want to pick up a motherboard capable of a modest overclock id be happy with 4ghz tbh.

Im not too fussed about latest tech as long as itll work well with my CPU and the SSD drive I plan to buy im happy.

Should i wait for a couple of weeks for the Z68 discounts to start or plump for a Z77 from the off.

Any reccomendations on a motherboard that will meet my not at all fussy demands?
The cheaper the better :D
Thanks
Scott

the problem with gigabyte boards (I say problem, im sure 99% of people it wont affect) is they don't normally stick VGA/DVI/HDMI ports on them. I notice the one stuild linked had a HDMI which is a start, but other brands at the same price offer OBV (which if you need to sell a card to get cash for a new one is handy to keep you going). just my thoughts.

The two Gigabyte boards that are in stock without an display ports are EOL along time ago and must be the last lot of stock in the UK, they were released when the P67 boards had that SATA issue (thats how old they are)

They have both been replaced a long time ago by,

GA-Z68XP-UD5
GA-Z68XP-UD3P

Which have display connectors.

That Asrock one looks nice! Am i likely to have to deal with bugs if im an early adopter of the new Z77 chipset?

Asrock have come on a lot in the past few years 5-6 years ago when i last played with this stuff they just did budget boards.

mine arrives tomorrow so will let you know if I have any issues, but I don't think there should be as I think it more additions to the Z68 rather than whole new technology

Maybe, but then Asrock are a bit buggy, I had a Z68 extreme4, glad its gone to be honest, but then I had to arrange a RMA for its new owner as it failed big time. Never again.

really? I got mine just after you and not had any problems at all with mine. have done a few builds at work and none have had problems.

Yep, sold it and 2 weeks later it had died, arranged a RMA as it was still under a year old, compared to the Gigabyte that replaced it, it really was light weight and felt cheap.

Asrock have a 2year warranty based in the Netherlands, Gigabyte are 3years in the UK.

gigabytes 3 year warrenty is based on the serial number though don't they, so if its been sitting in a warehouse don't you loose some? im not trying to be awkward, just not too sure.

When I sorted the RMA for the Asrock I had to ask him for the serial number to type it in.

from my understanding from our suppliers, ASRock 2 years start from date of purchase, all RMA will require a serial number to raise so you don't send a different item.

like I said, im not trying to be awkward, was just curious where you would stand if you bought a gigabyte board that was sitting in a warehouse for a year if its been advertised with a 3 year warrenty.

I see the new chipset uses the CPU GFX as a boost to the GPU. I like the sound of that! think Z77 it is!

the Z68 boards do that too. its Lucid Virtu. but the Z77 boards have Lucid Virtu MVP (well atleast the ASRock ones do) which is apparently a redeveloped version. this is what im keen in as it claims that you can have virtual vsync, allowing higher FPS without screen tearing.

I shall find out for you:)

from our dealings with gigabyte they are quite strict, but so far everything has fallen within the 3 years. but from their RMA section

Warranty Effective On Date of Manufacture

GIGABYTE determines warranty based on the manufacture date. The manufacture date can be verified by the serial number found on the product. The first four digits after "SN" determine the year and week of manufacturing date. For example:

"4719331822101 SN082540084966" represents the 25th week of 2008
Source

and a quick google shows some unhappy customers with items under 3 years old (since their purchase) being rejected.

overall gigabyte build quality is good, but we have sent more gigabyte boards back than ASRock (none from memory) and biostar.

Shows what i know :D

Hopefully OCUK will list the Asrock on their site soon.
