Sub 1k car - cheap to run...what would you choose?

The ST24 has been playing up recently, currently getting looked at but not 100% sure what is wrong, just keeps loosing power.

As I have just paid off £5k on a loan I am a bit strapped for cash, £1k is what I can push to if the worst comes to worst and the car needs a costly repair.

I am looking to buy a better car in about 6 months anyway so literally needs to last at least that amount of time.

Was thinking possibly a 406 HDi? Any other options out there?

What is the mpg like on them?

Ideally would like something better than the ST24 if possible. Just been driving a KA to and from work, gone from £30 a week to £15!! Cheap motoring but dont like the small car!

I used to get 35mpg without even trying (70-30 mixture of B roads and town driving). 40mpg on the motorway is totally possible.
 
sounds good to me, mine is mostly A roads so should be good for that.

Is there much to look out for on these?
