Sub 20k bit of fun.

Under £20k and fun. There's only one answer, Elise (or Exige)

I've had a 987 Boxster S and currently own a Mini Cooper S but nothing comes close to an Elise/Exige for fun (and that includes some of the supercars I've driven too)
 
If this was going to be a bit of fun, I'd rather a RWD car. Not saying FWD hot hatches aren't great, they are, in fact a Cooper GP was giving me a hard time round Bedford Autodrome - very capable cars. However, there's still something more fun about a RWD car.

Would you consider one or are you more set on a smaller hatch sized car?
 
Just come back from an ST test drive with a huge smile on my face and a very good offer on the table over £100 less per month than the Cooper S.

I understand everyone's suggestions around an older RWD car being better value for money and it has made me ponder so thanks for all the great (and bonkers) suggestions but so far in life I have driven:

Mini Cooper 07 (Learned to drive in)
Fiat Scicento 51
Toyota Yaris 03

So as you can see my car past pedigree isn't particularly exciting so I'm pretty set on settling for an ST for now. The only decision is base red or pay that little bit more for metallic blue :D

Do let us know if you go through with it and your ownership experience. I will probably be doing the same by the end of the year/beginning of next year.
 
There comes a point at which any accident will cost the company more because the cost of repairs will write the car off. Instead of paying out £2k on repairs for a £15k car they end up paying our £3k on the cheaper car because they write it off.

Well, no - if a £3k car can be completely repaired including all costs for £2k and there are no issues with part supply then they will repair it for £2k not write it off for £3k.
 
When the old man (I shall refrain from giving my opinion on his driving skills) pulled out in front of me in my rather old and tatty Nissan Almera the repairs were going to cost £1100. They wanted to write it off and offered me £1500. Strange maths.

Then there's the case of the RS4's with the stolen seats. Because the seats can't be bought whole, only in parts a pair of seats is circa £14k. RS4's have been written off by insurance companies despite being worth only a small amount less than the cost for both seats.
