Sub 300 Squid Laptop!

Ideally even as low as £250 - just looking for one to go for dad's birthday - all he does is Skype, a bit of email, sometimes Excel docs, the odd facebook and photos, and some streaming vids of random TV shows!

I got him previously a 11.6 in AMD-based netbook, had 2 gig RAM and completely naff - slow as you like (though running Vista which doesn't help!).

Maybe trying to upgrade that and swapping the OS may help?

Microsoft Surface? Comes with office (the RT not pro) office is around £100 mark so if you buy a laptop u'd have to add that ontop.

Easily do what he wants its just wether he'd want a tablet.

Otherwise I'd suggest a chromebook.
