sub £500 lappy for multi-tasking & DVD playback

Interesting! I have been looking at Dell as the Vostro seems to be the 'best thing since sliced bread' judging by the size of the thread. However the Toshiba seem a lot cheaper and have better features.

How solid are they compared with other machines. A l o n g time ago they were the highest regarded for battery life but I have not been in the market for a while. I am really looking for a machine that might do all the things I do on the desktop and thus thin down on wires and space as well as being able to take stuff with me to meetings, (I am a treasurer and it is hard to answer all the things one is asked without access to the original accounts on the computer.)

I've never actually owned a laptop before so it's hard for me to make any comparisons.

Performance wise though it feels nearly as quick as my quad core desktop, I haven't had any chance to test it with anything paticularly demanding yet but i'm pretty confident.

I checked loads of laptops and their specs online and to be fair the Toshiba came out really well as far as value for money goes.

I didn't want a 17" screen as i've got a desktop PC too, I didn't want to play games on it as that's what my desktop is for.

Because I didn't go 17" and opted out of getting a better gfx card I got a better CPU, HDD and Memory which is more useful for what i'll use it for.

They look rather sleek too ;)

I dunno, when I was buying my lappy recently there was nothing by Toshiba that got near the Vostro 1500 for value. The spec in my sig for £550 delivered (and a lot cheaper if you don't need the 8600 and 1440*900 screen). Hardly matters now though since the 1500 is being phased out.

Back on topic though, 'multi-tasking and dvds' doesn't really need anything more than a basic laptop, 2 GB ram, decent dual core (say 1.8GHz or above). Shouldn't need to spend £500 for that.

I have not bought one yet, still researching.

Dunno what to do :(

Theres the places I buy DVD's from, but I feel they might be expensive.

e-mail in trust for any suggestions!

This months PC Pro magazine has a bit of a write up on cheap laptops. On the basis of the review I have just order a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 2515 Core 2 Duo 5250. This actually came second in the review but the indiviual scores gave it a significantly higher mark in screen quality than the winner which was a Dell, so I went for it on that basis. Cost £400 quid inc vat. There is also a review of the Asus EEEpc 900 in this month.
