Sub £500 Laptop

A friend has asked me to recommend a laptop for surfing and general use. He has a very limited budget of £400 but could possibly stretch up to £500. I dont have a clue about laptops so could anyone offer him any advice or recommendations please?

Does your friend plan to travel much? Ie if there's a choice between a faster laptop that's heavier and has worse battery, compared to slightly slower but light & has battery stamina, where would they prefer?

I think he wants it to just use from home.

There are a lot of choices, which makes it difficult to recommend any particular model. Acer Aspire 5742, Samsung R530, HP G62... but try to get a i3 processor, 3 or 4 GB of RAM, and a decent hard drive. Most of them should be available to check out in local shops. They may have different internals (like older Core Duo processors and what not), or not be very competitive. But at least you got to try them in person and then can check out reviews before committing £400.
