Hi guys, looking for a sub and amp for my car. Im quite useless when it comes to this sort of stuff

At the moment i have a standard HU but will buy a new one when i order my sub and amp.

Can anyone recommend any for me? My budget is around £150, cheers.

What size of car is it and what sort of music do you listen to?

Toyota Starlet (1.3 :P) so 3 door.

Music... ermm well anything, mainly trance, drum and bass, bit of rock and roll, i would play anything in my car as long as no screaming ;)

You're going to struggle to get something new for 150, but for a car that size something 8~10" is more than enough to enhance sound quality.

You could either try and find something second hand, I bought my Alpine 2 channel amp for about 30 quid (might have been less actually) and kenwood 10" boxed sub for 20.

The other option would be an active sub, so just one unit - nice and tidy in a smaller car. I've heard mixed reviews of the Fli units, but having heard the FT10 myself, it sounded pretty good to me (by car standards). The Infinity Basslink might be perfect though - RRP is 199 but plenty places have it for about 150~160

In my old fiesta I had a 10" SPLX sub & amp from motorworld which was about £100 for the package.

Don't knock it! It was all the bass I needed and was flipping good for £100 lol.

Subs are 2x 10" 500w JBL CS10 units, never had them loud enough to distort as feared bits of trim would fall off :D

Edit: Amp is 2x 200w RMS, which is the more accurate figure. :)

I used to have a cheap 10" sub, in a sealed box with a Mutant amp. Very cheap and budget setup, which actually sounded pretty good.

Granted, I didn't have it ramped right up but to add a bit of fill where the speakers couldn't reach it worked really well. Spend about £50, set it up properly and it'd do the job perfectly.

You shouldn't actually be able to tell that there's a sub installed, you want it all to blend in together.

Lol I love car audio specs. Those subs are nowhere near 500w, more like 100.. ;)

What make is the amp? 2 x 200w RMS sounds pretty meaty!

I've heard of Pyramid, was it new or second hand? If they are the ones I am thinking of (quite possibly not!) then they are supposed to be awesome!

I've found it to be awesome, that was new :)

Personally I'd go for quality over wattage, but it depends on whether you want sound quality or volume!

Hmm no that wasn't what I was thinking of.. the amps I had in mind were about 10x the price of that one new (thought it might have been second hand).

iand: You can get both! My Audison SRx 3 is powerful (250w sub channel and 2 * 75w front stereo) and also sounds lovely :).
