Hey, so I've had a change around and I know I'll probably get some flak but I feel this is the better choice for me.

I used to have the REL HT1003 in black, and I loved it. Sometimes it wasn't clear what make the sub was but REL kindly put REL everywhere on the sub. lol. :p But, aesthetically it just didn't work in the room since it has been done out. Just a big black cube, vs everything else which is wood and neutral colours. The room is only 3x4m roughly, so 12m2 and the REL was turned down quite low.

For my bookshelf speakers in the room I use Dali Oberon 1's in the light wood with the grey cloth grilles. They replaced some B&W speakers about 18 months ago. The B&W were also black and too big for the room. So like the B&W the REL has to go. And credit where credit is due, for the Dali Oberon 1's they work "OK" without a sub. I threw "Falling in Reverse - Ronald" on and the poor little Dali's did their best but need a sub. Their 5 1/4" woofer just can't get that low. There are some very low moments in this song. The drums also kick hard!

I reached out to both RS and PT for a trade in, and actually I've been let down by RS for the first time. Zero response! PT were back in touch the same day and just 24 hours later I have the new sub and the old sub was taken away. Radio silence from RS which is unlike them. I got a nice discount on the new sub, costing me a little over £100 in the end. The sub I've chosen to go with the Dali Oberon 1's is the Ruark RS1 in the walnut wood with grey cloth. So slightly darker than other things in the room. It is a 100W Class D and a somewhat dinky 170mm/7" cone. Dimensions however are key, and are perfect to fit next to the desk. I've managed to shuffle the room around to create more space because of this change. All my guitar gear on one side of the room, and my exercise bike on the other side. Everything fits perfectly.

Quick snap. I think fits in perfectly for the room size.

I'm running the sub in for a bit and I then will re-run the WiiM calibration. I think that's also been improved with recent firmware updates so worth redoing the calibration anyway. At the moment the crossover is 65Hz and is handled via the WiiM Amp Pro, and the sub crossover I've maxed at 180Hz (effectively disabling it) and volume is on full. I'm interested to see over the coming days how a downward firing sub sounds to me vs the previous forward facing sub. The floor is wood as well so be interesting to see if that makes a difference. I'm going to assume that being downward firing there'll be less reflections vs the old REL sub. We shall see.

Anyway, that was my mini update I thought I'd share. :)

Thanks for reading!

Well this little thing is great so far! Chucked a few songs at it to mix things up, from the lovely wandering bass line in "Phil Collins - Something Happened on the Way to Heaven", through to the brilliant drums in "War Pigs" (but the Ozzy and Judas Priest version), through to "Limp Bizkit - Livin' it Up" and ending with "Mammal - Think" (which is a great song to test out some lows. Bass and Drums are great). It doesn't sound isolated, it merges nicely with what is coming out of the speakers. Perhaps the difference of the downward firing cone there vs the forward facing REL. And it can get low. Quite surprised by that, as I didn't think it would manage some of the harder stuff. Bass is tight and not flubby. So far so good. Had to give it +3dbm in WiiM but that little boost seems like all it needed.

For stereo you don't need to go crazy on subwoofer either of the subs you'd have are fine

oh when you measure room size for suitable sub, you have to use height as well.
Thanks, I did not know that (on either point) so good to know. So room size will therefore be 3x4x2 (ish) so 24m3.

That's not a massive room so yeah 10" sealed sub or similar be fine.

Mines triple that room volume so I run triple setup (two 15" and one 12" ported) with minidsp HD
