Sub failure?

Hi all

Last night I was listening to some music (2.1 setup - bookshelf speakers, Pioneer SX-N30, 8" mordaunt short Avant 309i sub) and all of a sudden the sub stopped playing back the music and started going mad, doing it's on wubba wubba wubba sound. Best way I can describe it. :D I turned the amp off, and the sound continued from the sub (all music playback had stopped). I flicked the sub into standby and back on and the sound continued. I yanked the plug in the end. Fast forward to today I fired up some music and thought I'd try the sub again. Plugged it in, power comes on standby led on the rear, flick from standby to active, front led comes on and the sub clicks but nada. Not a peep from the sub.

Does this sound like a typical failure when a sub goes / internal component? Or could it be the outputs on the amplifier? The mordaunt short sub is old, I think it is over 10 years I've had it. The amp is a newer so I was leaning towards the sub being the culprit.

I think sit is time yeah. RIP 309i. :) Erm so I'll be honest, not a lot of budget. So the room is just 4x3m (13x10') a normal/small sized office I guess you'd say, which is 130sqft. Placement is on the same wall as the speakers but to the right hand side. Not in a corner.

The 309i I believe was a 10" sub with about 175w peak power. I was hoping to get something to match the Bowers & Wilkins bookshelf speakers I use and I saw their entry sub, the ASW608 which would be a good fit. Smaller size, compact, 8" driver. And also compared to the 309i it is a sealed unit with no porting. So apparently that means better for music? Which is mainly what this is for and it has a slightly higher power at 200w. Then the setup will be all Bowers & Wilkins so I guess it should compliment each other nicely.

I watched this YouTube review here by Nemo Propoganda and he seemed to be genuinely impressed by how good it was for the money. And with the extra features it had.

Peter Tyson are doing it for £345.
 
I know, but my OCD would be happier if they could match but yes not the end of the world if they didn't. I was sceptical but not sure if you watched that video, the guy was genuinely impressed with the quality for the size. If it was poor I'm sure he would have slated it. I mean the variable filter went down to 25Hz and he said that was the first thing he checked in case it was just marketing rubbish. But apparently it did 25Hz. The Gemini sub seems weaker in comparison, only 40Hz on the variable filter and less power (150w vs 200w on the ASW608). Double Gem looks like total overkill for what I need. :D The XLS200 seems interesting. Just reading about it over on AV Forums. Thanks.

It was on offer for 350 so I was happy with that. 5 year warranty etc. I took your advice and stayed away from 8" driver. I know its RELs entry range but I think it'll be a marked improvement over the i309 it is replacing. I watched and read a few reviews on it before pushing the button. :)
