There seems to be a "War on Video Game Addiction" currently raging across the world as the condition is becoming a more recognized problem in countries such as China and South Korea; where marathon gaming sessions have left several people dead.

Xtive, a Korean start-up company, has proposed a system of sending subliminal audio messages to gamers telling them that their time is up and they should stop gaming. The messages are not recognizable to a person a conscious level, but the subconscious mind can hear them as they are repeated 10,000 to 20,000 times a second on an acoustic sound wave.

"Game users can't recognize the sounds. But their subconscious is aware of them and the chances are high they will quit playing," Xtive President Yun Yun-hae said. He claims that the company has performed tests proving that the method works.

Certainly it is a far more humane method of curing a person of video game addiction. In China they are electrocuting the addiction out of people.

Of course this technology also has other potential uses, as Yun points out. "We can easily change the messages. In this sense, the potential for this technology is exponential." Yvan Eht Nioj.

In Guild Wars a message pops up every hour saying..

"You have been playing for one hour."

"You have been playing for two hours, please take a break."

Gets funny when you leave it afk for a few hours. :p

assuming consent is given by the addicted gamers, I can't see a problem with it. At the end of the day if people are content with their addiction they should be left to it.
