Hi,

I am looking to do an exam soon which is to complete my MCSA however the next exam is the one I'm really going to struggle on as it's all to do with Subnets and what have you (70-291 for those interested).

Is there anywhere out there that has a really easy to use guide on calculating Subnets?

Cheers,

M.

Sorry for the slow reply - I've been snowed under.

Basically as I'm revising I know some of the questions are going to give me an IP and I have to work out a Subnet or I'm going to have an IP and Subnet and then suggest a new Subnet which will allow 30 Subnets or something along those lines.

I just need to know how to calculate them. I can calculate an IP into Binary which helps a little so I'm told.

An Idiots Guide book would be good as well if anyone could recommend something?

Take it you can't take in a subnet table table then? :(
Not sure of books I'm afraid. Did watch a Cisco video about subnetting, found that easy to take in.
When I was first taught to work it out I remember coming out thinking WTF! I just looked a few sites and kinda figured it out myself!

This is my learning resource I got when I did mine. Only did a couple out of this though. :o

Warning 4meg files.

Sorry about poor handwriting. Yours will also be this messy though!

The 0 subnet is used for network, the last one is used for broadcast. So if it asks for usable subnets it does not include the first one, and if you have bothered to work it out to the end, the last one.

Hope this helps. :)

It's helping.

I do agree with the WTF statement it seems to me everywhereI look that theres a step taken out.

The Microsoft books are horrid for doing this they naturally assume that you've fully understood the entire philosophy behind Subnetting after a 10-line paragraph!

I'll go through your links now mate - thanks for all the help.

P.S. No not allowed to take in anything into the exam - can use the inbuilt windows calculator but thats about it.

This site maybe of use mate. http://www.learntosubnet.com/

I'm currently revising for the 291 also to complete my MCSA. I'm currently making my way through the Testout cbt's - but they don't go into calculating subnets for some reason. Finished DHCP and am almost finished with DNS.

This is going to be one tough exam.

Man I wrote an awesome subnetting guide when I was first learning it, but I can't find it anywhere :@

Is beansprout still about, I swear it's on his twobeds server but I can't remember my login.

Well I think it was awesome anyway... always used to use it to refresh myself!

Wait till you start doing VSLM... the boundries of classfull subnetting disapear :p.... saying that it really isn't that hard a concept once you get your head around it. I just keep forgetting lol

when i did my 291 exam i revised subnets for hours then only got 1 question on it :(

edit, i had shedloads of dns questions, specailly when to use a stub zone or secondary zone or fowarders etc

Not looking forward to this one the last two exams (270 and 290) have been reasonably okay - the 270 I found harder than the 290 which I flew (and I had 6 simluations in that one as well).

Any other pointers to do those that have done it? I know DNS will be in there a lot.
