we are just kitting up our new conservatory and would quite like the sound to be "all around us" - i was looking at the Bose Companion 5 set for £300 quid but just realised (as far as i can see) that its only 2.1 rather than a 5 speaker setup?

so yeah, subtle, under 300 quid, and capable of taking 2 inputs if possible for the ipod and also tv?

what you reckon?

The problem is that the songs you're playing from the iPod will be 2 channels, as will most TV programmes. Any system which converts that to 5.1 will be using some algorithm which essentially guesses which sounds should be coming from which speaker. More often than not the software gets it horribly wrong, and it sounds much worse than it would coming from two decent speakers.

The best you can hope for is probably something which duplicates the sound from the front 2 channels onto the rears.

Dolby Pro Logic II has been around for a long time and has always done what your describing perfectly well, for TV and movies anyway but I agree music will probably sound better in stereo.

True, for TV it might be OK. But there were a couple of Pro Logic modes on my old Z-5500s, and for music it sounded pants.

Even with TV, it means you're not hearing what the producer intended you to hear.
