Hi all, I bought a Marantz PM6005 with some Monster Audio BX2's about a year ago, now I'm considering a sub.

Since my amp doesn't have a sub out, I know I have to use the "high level inputs"?

So I could just buy something like ; http://www.richersounds.com/product/subwoofers/wharfedale/powercube-spc10/whar-diam-spc-10?

Firstly, would this be a worthwhile addition.

And secondly, how do I go about cabling it?

At the moment, my BX2's are just in the Speaker A binding posts on my amp, so would the subwoofer just go in the remaining 4?

I'm a noob with Hi-fi stuff so yeah :p

You can use the recorder out ( labeled audio out at the bottom ) of your 6005 to feed the SPC10 rca audio input.

For flexibility I recommend an active sub with seperate volume control though.

The issue I see is that you have no way of setting the crossover frequency between your BX2 and the sub (something that can be done on a receiver), so your BX2 will be going all the way down to 42Hz even with the sub, instead of shifting the lower frequency over to let the sub handling it.

Another thing you have to considering is making sure that the sub would be a good match for your BX2. I have the Edifier S730, and hooking the sub up to my Q Acoustics 3010 it is almost a match in heaven due to both leaning toward the slightly warmer side of sounding; hooking up my BX2 up with the sub, while the mids and highs still sound good on the BX2, it just feel out of place and doesn't goes too well with the sub, due to the BX2 being more natural sounding and slightly leaning toward the brighter side.

Consider you have no control over the crossover for your BX2, it would mean that it will be outputing the full range of the speakers is capable of, rather tha shifting the lower frequency over to the sub as I mention earlier. Because of this, I really think you must get a sub that the BX2 will not feel too out of place even when outputting the full range and can blend in with the sub bass, so you might actually need to have look at Monitor Audio's own sub in the same series- the BXW-10 may be.

But at the end of the day, it might not be a worthwhile thing to do as you yourself wondered...so may be the best bet is to bring your BX2 and Marantz PM6005 down to your local RicherSounds and give the various subs a try? But I am pretty sure the staff would tell you pairing a sub with the BX2 and PM6005 this way is not the most sensible thing to do. I have enquired about this combination with one of their staff before, and they right out stating they would not recommend it.

So, it might just be best to leave my set up as is?
I have no complaints at all now.
I think unless you going to throw in a receiver as well with a) pre-out to connect to your PM6005 and drive the BX2 b) sub output to connecting to an active sub, it's probably not worth it considering that the PM6005 already pair quite well with the BX2 on its own.

Stick with what you got I would say. If anything, I would say have a look at how/where you are placing your BX2, as they sound much better at a distance and wider apart at higher volume and will give you bigger soundstage than using it at close distance. Even adjust the angle of your speakers could make a huge difference.
