Hi guys,

I'm looking to get two 12inch subs along with an amp for a maximum of £240, has anybody got any good recommendations? As I'm not really the best with speaker brands.

Thanks

If you're just looking to throw out ridiculous amounts of low range so it rattles peoples windows, for £240, anything will do.

i would just get the one at that price, it will be nicer than 2 and might even be louder. i have 2X12" FLI subs and they distort at fairly low volume and dont really go that loud.

I'd agree, it's been a while since I was into that kind of thing, but I had a single 12" vibe sub/box/built in amp thing which I believe is the more better/expensive version of FLI..it made my nose twitch and the fluid in my eyeballs shake if I set it too loud. :D

Something like this;

So for example, spending £200 on a single subwoofer such as alpine would be better that getting two subwoofers of a make such as edge or fli?

I'd be looking for Kicker or Pioneer (I have a Kicker in my car, part of an upgraded audio package) and it's great. I'd be looking to upgrade to component speakers at the same time... 6x9's are not good... at all...

One sub of a higher quality will give you a better sound and frequency range, as opposed to two low quality subs with crap frequency range that are there simply to rattle the fillings out of your teeth.

I listen to a lot of jungle, drum and bass and dubstep, so I would go with a high quality single 10" or 12" over a pair of low quality that end up distorting and muddying frequencies above or below a certain level.

The Talkaudio forums will get you some better responses, plus a for sale section with plenty of quality used audio :)

You have to look at the whole package, at the same price range a single sub enclosure will be built better, have a better quality speaker, and a more powerful mono amp, generally speaking.

That's why you can buy a twin 12 active box for £99 or a single 12 for £200, the £200 will generally have a much better amp built in, and will sound a lot louder and better.

Twin sub boxes in this price range will have a lot of corners cut, cheaper subs, and an amplifier that's not necessarily up to driving the subs properly, resulting in distortion etc.

Depends what you listen to as well. Drum and bass is usually fast and punchy so you would prefer smaller subs to give you quick response times.

On the other hand if you listen to songs like Put On, then you want 15/18s.

Steer away from 6x9's. A nice starting set up would be some amped component speakers up front and a 12/10" sub in the boot. That will prevent the usual problem which is big sub with no front upgrade = lots of bass but also lots distortion from the front which can't keep up.

Also got flamed last time for saying this but I don't care. Please spend some money on sound deadening. Why spend that money for the bass to be '******' away rattling your bodywork.

READ MY POST DAMNIT.

6x9's are pathetic and crap.

Nonsense, typical internet fan boy mythology repeated ad nauseam by people that don't know better. 6x9s can sound fine, or they can sound crap depending on a host of other variables, just as with any drivers.

Judging by previous threads, all he wants is 'epic bass init bruv' and so rattling the car to bits is of no real concern. He's not after sound quality so much as being as loud as possible for as cheap as possible I expect. Sound deadening would be wasted on him.

Is it though? The vast majority of 6*9s I've seen are fitted in the rear parcel shelf firing up giving you full range audio about as far away from your listening position as you can get in a car. It's akin to going to a concert and deciding to sit in your seat backwards. I speak of this from experience, I've had a few different audio setups ranging in quality. My first was in my corsa which started with cheap speakers up front and a cheap all in one sub in the boot which was nice and balanced. When I moved to my yaris I had better speakers in the front, the same sub in the boot, and 6*9s in the back that came with the cat. I ended up turning the 6*9s pretty much completely off as they just threw the entire sound stage behind me and it sounded better relying on the front speakers.

Now I'm in my MX-5 a sub isn't an option, so I have a good quality head unit, high quality component speakers and a small line level amp. It sounds the best of any of the setups by far. Admittedly it doesn't rattle my windows any more but actually the music sounds better than it did in any of my other setups.

I'm sure given optimal conditions 6*9s can sound good, but the vast majority of people whack them in the parcel shelf which is just the wrong place for them.

As others have said, the budget would be much better spent on a single high quality 10/12" sub with amp, then assuming you haven't already some good quality front components that put the tweeters as close to your ears as possible. This should give a nice balanced sound.

OP has a appropriate username for a thread like this. :p

Please don't stick a massive ripspeed subwoofer in the boot of a Corsa B.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the 6x9 form factor that makes them all crap. What makes them crap is when someone sticks a £50 FLI set on their parcel shelf. But then, if you stick a £500 set of Focal components on the parcel shelf then they'll sound like arse as well.

Drive your booming heaps of chavness near me and I will fart in your general direction. Wear a baseball cap with a seat on the floor I will call in some Polish heavies to find you....and then set fire to you. If you do all of this and wear sovereigns, I will change the Polish to Chechens and give them free rein.

Bar humbug.
