1991 - Intel 486 SX25, bought for me by my Dad to replace my Megadrive :p

The first and last Intel system I have owned. Afterwards:

Cyrix 686
{might have missed one here}
AMD 1700
AMD Barton 2500
[missed one: AMD Opteron single core here :p]
AMD x2 3800
AMD Athlon II x3 435

then....

2012: Intel 2500k

I feel so dirty. I will start calling myself Darth FoxEye and immediately begin strangling kittens.

I'm so sorry, AMD. You been good to me, but I'm ditching you for a younger, fitter model.

This is a silly thread, I know. It's just that after 21 years of being determined not to support the evil Empire, I am now the demons.

It's a real shame BD turned out to be a turkey. Not that I have anything against turkeys, I just wouldn't want one powering my PC ;)

wish I tried a BD perhaps one day yet :)
Said times when BD is considered as a Cpu of choice :p J/K
Yes Yes i know Intel fanboi lol, only ever had 1 AMD think it was the opteron or some thing like that.
Loved the prices bit didn't real like how they performed :\

Arise lord FoxEye welcome to the Darkside

We have powers the other side can only dream off.

I only had intel CPU's until the launch of the Athlon. I switched over to AMD and stayed there until intel launched the Conroe based C2D's. Can't see myself buying another AMD CPU in the near future. Hope i'm wrong though.

Using a Sandy i5 at work and my FX4100 at home, I can honestly say I don't really notice any difference. I've had my graphics card (MSI Twin Frozr 4 edition) in both boxes and Battlefield 3 runs perfectly well on both, so I'm kinda a bit "So why the extra £60 for the Intel one?"

BF3 is massively GPU limited, pretty poor comparison.
Try shogun 2 with an 80 stack on the FX4 at stock and then the i5.

See, that's the thing. If the CPU works for what I want to use it for but isn't quite as good for things I never touch, why bother spending the extra money? Good enough is good enough.

The i3 is the competing Intel chip, and it's the same price pretty much ;) And the i3 is the better chip.

I dare you to play MF3 or most of games in 3D and tell me that intel is not better. Not to mention OC.

Erm, would help if I knew what on earth you meant by MF3.

At no juncture, I'd like to point out, have I said that intel chips aren't better. Hell, I've owned one of the 2630QM Sandy Bridges (in a Dell XPS 17 for anyone curious) and I can quite happily say it was substantially quicker. With a decent graphics chipset instead of the integrated Geforce GT555M I was restricted to, I would have no doubt in saying it would be substantially faster than my current desktop rig.

However, not so much faster to make graphics-bottlenecked applications (such as 3D shooters) noticeably different. Entirely in my opinion, and I fully expect to get shot down for it, but there you go :D

The i3-2100 is probably the most comparable to the FX4100 (with passmark synthetic benchmarks showing the i3 about 2% lower). The FX4100 (with the current rebate offer) is about £15 cheaper.

If you look at the price scale however, going up to the FX8120 at £110 including £20 cashback, the closest comparable processor in terms of passmark points is the i5-3450. This is £155 - almost 50% more expensive.

Yeah, yeah, I know synthetic benchmarks certainly aren't the be all and end all, but c'mon - price performance, what?

That was always my rationale for buying AMD in the past.

The reason for my 2500k purchase is that I do not believe AMD even offer good performance/£ compared to Intel anymore.

Now the FX processors might beat an i3 in highly-threaded video encoding tasks, etc, but that's not what I use my PC for. Mine is a gaming rig.

And there an i3 will handily beat out any FX, even the FX8xxx chips.

I know how you feel darth fox eye. No matter how many times I wash, I still feel dirty for going with a 2700k as opposed to bd lol ;)

I look forward to the future where amd are at least able to catch up to intel when I will gladly jump ship :D

Its bad for intel users if AMD are not competative. Its means intel can slow down on innovation and keep prices high. We look forward to -

Return of the AMD.
