I am such a sucker!!!

I decided that it was finaly time to upgrade this summer, so I chose everything I wanted, with a Q9450 at the heart of the machine...

... then I heard that the Q9550 was about to drop to the same price within a short time scale... and I though great, I can wait 1-2 months...

... as soon the Q9550 dropped in price, the E0 stepping was announced as being released on 22 Aug... that's not far away I thought.

We're now in mid/late September, and the E0 is nowhere to be seen.

Even though Crysis Warhead is in the post due to me placing an early pre-order (at a good price) because I was sure I'd have my new rig by now... in general, I don't find much time for gaming nowadays, so what's another 1-2 months, and Nehalem will be out!!!

However, I'm guessing that a full Nehalem setup with decent speed DDR3 will be significantly more expensive; will we realistically see good availability this side of Christmas; and do we really need the extra power, as I've read many people saying that their C2D setups handle everything they through at them.

Is it time to man up, or do I wait for Nehalem? Incidentally, a couple of months ago I thought it stupid to dismiss a Q9550/P45 system and hang on for Nehalem!

Nehalem has no benefit to games.

What you want is a nice 45nm quad with as much L2 as you can get. And some fast DDR2. Only reason to wait would be a possible price adjustment on current parts once Nehalem is out. Haven't seen anything on INQ/FUD though.

I share your woes. I've been in exactly the same position with deciding upon my new rig as well. The EO Q9550 was supposed to be the buying point for me although as you've said...no sign of it yet. I'm leaning more towards waiting now as I've always seemed to buy at the wrong time before and at the end of a current socket or architecture meaning that I can't simply upgrade a processor. Having had the Atari 1040 Ste(I was that sucker), XP 2800, and lastly a Pentium D (775 socket although AGP) as my sore points....I think I might just wait for Nehalem and at least be at the start of the new socket and architecture. Whether I need the extra power or not is better than having the most powerful rig on the old architecture and not being able to upgrade without a complete system overhaul. That's just the way I'm trying to rationalise it anyway...I am finding it hard to wait much longer though as it's been a long wait to this point.

To be honest, I think I will pul the trigger as soon as I see the Q9550 E0 for sale... I know this is more waiting, but it really can't be long until they're available..... can it??!!!!:(

The other thing in the factor is that I reckon a Nehalem platform will be a few hundred more expensive, especially going for 6Gb of RAM to max triple channel... memory 3 x £85 (modest DDR3), X58 mobo approx £220... assume processors to be about the same (that's what the word is)... so that's ~ £475 vs £300 for a good P45 and 4GB of top DDR2 memory.

I have sent you an email offering some advice.

Thanks, easyrider... haven't received anything yet, but will keep an eye open (though I'm not sure how you know my email?).

I'm in the same exact boat Stu!

I've allready ordered my case and about to order the parts next sat. Hopefully the E0 will be avail by then but if not il prob still place the order. Too hard waiting!

You will be waiting for ever unfortunatley. There is always something bigger and better around the corner. :(

Its nasty waiting tbh.... but at sametime what can you do u know as soon as you buy something 3 months later its worth 50% what u paid for and its all of a sudden slower and isnt as good ;)

Ive seen Q6600 riggs going for £270 on the high street stores and off fleabay as well so its not too shabby too have a highend rigg especially DDR2 at silly prices.

Am gonna wait till nehalem though since its only end of November and its almost October now...

If you buy cheaper components rather than pretty much the best you can get hold of it's much easier to take the plunge.

I'm in the same position.

However, I'm only waiting for the price adjustments (which I think is a sensible move )once the new processors and mobos come out. I only use my pc for gaming so I'm just going to get some fast DDR2, overclock a E7200, P45 mobo, and put in a nice graphics card. Job done.

I agree with the previous poster. You'll end up waiting forever. Good luck.

Just buy for now. Yeah, nehalem is coming out soon, but i personally wouldnt buy a new platform right away until later on.

People wait for months and months just to wait for the next big thing which will basically be out of date anyway since there will be something even better coming out after it.

If you try and wait for hardware to come down in price then it's a waste of time, doesnt matter when you buy, you will still lose out since prices drop all the time.

Just buy now and enjoy it. It's not as if current hardware is slow.
