Sudden CPU temp hike

I've got a 7900x3D (no OC) which has been running absolutely fine for the last 18 months. It used to idle around 40 when I first built the system but haven't checked it for months as never had any issues. Until today.

Was playing a game this morning, then after about 90 mins I went to make a brew and when I got back the pc had shut down. SO fired it back up and cracked on with gaming. 2 hours later it shut down again while I was playing. Just instantly lost power. Thought it might be the PSU but thought I'd run HWinfo just to check temps and my cpu was idling around 75! SO played some more games and kept an eye on the temps and it was constantly around 85 before it finally shut off again after around an hour. Decided to run cinebench and watch the temps and it lasted all of 10 minutes before it shut down.

I have an 360mm AIO cooler. Pump seems to be working (shows about 2400rpm in BIOS) and one pipe feels hot, the other cold which I believe is how its supposed to be. So I decided to get some thermal paste and reseat it. Still the same. After being turned off for a couple of hours it was idling at 70 in BIOS.

So now I'm wondering what to do. Could try another repaste to see if it makes any difference but if it doesn't then I guess I'm looking at another cooler. Could there be an issue with the AIO even though it seems to be functioning correctly ?

I doubt (hope) its not the cpu becoming faulty so I'm leaning towards the cooler. Any thoughts/help appreciated!

Thanks

At the best of times, AIO's do fade. My last AIO did exactly what you are describing. I sent it back under warranty but couldn't wait so I bought a replacement and then sold the returned AIO on ebay when it got back a week or two later.
I've had a few in different systems but never had an issue before now. Looks like I might have to RMA it and get a new one in the meantime. Can't be doing without my pc for a few days/weeks!

You could get a freezer 36 or peerless assassin/phantom spirit, they'd do the job fine until you get the AIO back.
Yeah good shout actually. Would see me through. Just on to Corsair now to see if they'll replace it

Edit : fair play to Corsair. Agreed to replace it after a 5 min live chat. Gave me the option of the standard I return it and they'll send a replacement or I could pay for one to be sent to me first and then return mine. Then get a refund once they receive it back.

Nice and simple. No jumping through hoops. Colour me impressed.

Replacement arrived and fitted. All running fine again. I've a feeling it had been on its way out for a while as this one is much quieter.

Good turnaround from Corsair too. I returned it on Wednesday and had the new one by Friday. Fair play.
