Sudden failure to POST

My newest box has suddenly decided to stop booting. It will spin up fans and spindles but dies in approx 1 sec.

It retries to boot about every 3 seconds until I kill the power.

I've isolated down to mobo, CPU and PSU and even tried without RAM altogether but no change.

Its a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 with a Core2 Duo and a Corsair HX520 PSU, my gut instinct says its a low voltage failure on the PSU or maybe motherboard but I have no other components to swap out and isolate.

Anyone seen anything like this with this hardware setup?

I'm a bit worried that without isolating things further, OC won't RMA and then I'm a bit stuck.

Cheers

Like you say it could be either, i would go with the motherbord, sounds like failed/failing motherbord to me...

although the only way to know for sure would be if you could swap the psu out..

if you have a spare, that has the correct connectors you could just try powering up the motherbord ram and gfx card, just to see if you can post.

Yep - thats my thought - I really need a PSU....

I'll have a scrounge around at work today and see what I can find - I suppose and older PSU and a simple PCI video card from something would at least tell me I'm on the right track.

I don't even need the VGA in there since it blows chunks with or without my 8800 installed; same goes for the RAM. My money is on the mobo....

You will need a GFX card in otherwise it will just beep at you.. actually that would be an improvement... :D

Have you booted the mobo out of the case? Sounds similar to shorting issues

Not yet - I've managed to blag the PSU from an Antec Sonata II case that I hope has enough/correct connectors to be of some use isolating the fault.

I'll whip the whole lot out onto a mat this evening when I get home. I doubt its a shorting issue as the machine has been living happily for about 4 months now - but I suppose you never know.
