Since building my new rig i have had sudden fps drops in games for no reason wil be hetting a decent 30 fps or so in crysis for example then will suddenly go down to like 9 fps then go back up a second later. when searching around on the net "dodgy power supply" kept popping up with people with similar issues.

i did have a problem with power first off which meant the pc was really unstable with the 4 pin cpu connector upon using the 8 pin instead it seemed to solve the issue but maybe i still have a minor power problem i found it a bit strange it was so unstable with the 4 pin cpu connector as i have read you don't need 8 pin unless you are overclocking.. - speedfan shows my +12vrail at 11.40 i read this was bare minimum for a stable system. it does not seem to fluctuate under load.

the power supply is a coolermaster realpower m850

rest of specs are
6 gb 1600 mhz corsair ram
core i7 920
asus p6t deluxe mobo
nvidia gtx 280
vista ultimate 64 bit - reinstalled today from 32 bit didnt solve issue.

any help or others experience will be gratefull - thanks

is that not normal in games, theres always some fluxuation for wexample in far cry 2 i can be a 50fps then move into a city or something and be down to 30

I remember playing crysis on my brother's pc and his FPS went up and down like a profitable hooker all the time. On less intensive games it was far less variable.

maybe im being paranoid but according to various benchmarks i never seeem to get anywhere near the minimunm fps i should be getting with my setup was the same with my last ddr2 rig with a q9450 but there was never any real bad fluctuations on that ie stayed above 20 on crysis - never droped to like 5!

maybe my hdd is bottlenecking somehow its a sata /300 16 mb cache seagate as that is the only component i havent changed recently other than the gfx card. i changed the psu to a coolermaster from some unbranded one because i was reading horror stories about bad power supplys taking out every component with it.

benchmark example crysis with a qx6850 oc 3.2 ghz 2gb ddr3 asus maximus extreme and a gtx 280 - probably similar or slower than my rig on 1680x1050 2xaa on high (exactly what i have been playing on) they record minimum 32 fps - yeah right! maybe walking along a bare road with maybe a single enemy or 2!
