Sudden jump in cpu temps

Hi all,

I've been running my overclocked rig for about 3 months now with no issue, but suddendly today I got a warning message about my CPU temp which was around 90C.

I have an E6750 overclocked to 3.6GHz which has been running at around 32 - 35 C at stock and around 55 C under load. It's now at 45 - 48 at stock.

Any ideas why the temp would suddenly jump. My HSF is OK and still securely fastened and at full RPM, the case hasn't been knocked. The computer has been on for about 5 hours today before it happened.

I noticed it after I ran a game which crashed on me (possibly due to the temp?).

Any ideas what I should look for. I'm going to remove the HSF and reinstall, but wondered if there was anything else that could have caused this.

Thanks in advance

Does seem a bit odd that?

I mean the weather is starting to get a bit warmer now, that would add a few degrees to the temps. A system thats been running a few months would likely have become a little dusted-up, that would add a few more degrees but certainly not the amount that you are describing!

I think most likely reason is someone maybe banged/jolted the case while u were not there and this has dislodged the HSF?

Obviously would be worth refitting the Heatsink and then u should be able to see if its been disturbed or not.

Normally when people bump into a computer they don't make a point of telling the owner! :o

The air intake's fine, all fans are working OK.

Very strange as there's only myself and the wife at home and I doubt it's been knocked about.

Oh well, I'll reset the fan and see what happpens.

No definately not dust, the PC is clean as a whistle as it get a through clean every month.

I reapplied the TIM and reset the fan and everything is back to normal.

Very strange as the HSF was securely fastened when I took it off.

Oh well, sorted now. I'll just have to keep an eye on it. I've knocked back the overclock a little too for the time being anyway.

Thanks
