Los Angeles. Private investigator. Missing person. Mystery person. Colin Farrell is John Sugar. Sugar premieres April 5.

“Sugar” is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.

The series also stars Kirby (“The Sandman”), Amy Ryan (“The Wire”), Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry (“Mindhunter”), Alex Hernandez (“Invasion”), and James Cromwell (“Succession”), with guest stars Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”) and Sydney Chandler (“Don't Worry Darling”).“Sugar” is created by Mark Protosevich who also executive produces. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg executive produce for Genre Films, marking their second series with Apple TV+ under Kinberg’s overall deal following “Invasion.” Colin Farrell, Sam Catlin, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich also serve as executive producers. The series was directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “Two Popes”), who also executive produces, and Adam Arkin (“The Offer”), who also co-executive produces.

Watched the first couple of episodes last night and I am enjoying this. I will catch up over the week, I think we are up to episode 5 so far.

Edit: You can tell this is made by Apple though, the amount of iphones shown on screen for the first 5 mins of episode 3.

Very Surprised not more chat about this. has a little bit of a weird stylised approach, interjecting a couple of secs of classic detective films here and there. First episodes was ok, but from then on I've really been taken by it, taking the detective genre into a fresh direction.

Farell is good in the role. Plays a PI, who has a mostly veiled/unknown background, giving a sense that something is a little "off".

It took a mindblowing twist on the most recent episode I watched, can't recall if its 5/6 or 7.

And now I see this is only 8 episodes, so I'm hoping Ive got more than 1 left.

Wife and I really enjoyed this, the way it was shot, seeing classic films jotted around. I thought Farrell was perfect for the role, on the whole it felt freshly different etc…..then the last 2 episodes, what were they thinking? For us totally ruined all the build up and just didn’t make sense, which is a shame.

^ I really enjoyed it too but wow, leftfield it certainly went. I'm ok with that, something new and it almost worked but proper took you out of the noir stuff rapidly thereafter.

Just watched the first episode and it feels like something I’m really going to like.

Seemed to strike just the right balance of having lots of elements that spiked my interest making me want to watch more without have too much to confuse me.
