I'm looking for a game for my stepson who is 8. He doesn't like the usual stuff for children, his Dad lets him play CoD and GTA which me and the Fiancee disagree with massively. He saw me playing a bit of Breaking Point for Arma III and said that's the sort of game he likes. Something big where he can just run around and do stuff. I don't really want him playing online. Is there any game that anyone can think that would be suitable for him and that he would find interesting?

Skyrim may be a good one actually. He won't follow the story but providing he's allowed to just roam about with no purpose it should fit the bill.

You can do just that. There's no real violence (decapitations are rare), no bad language or nudity. It is typical sword fighting, magic, archery etc, but with dragons. :D

My son completed all the Half Life games when he was about 8. He still thinks they are the best games ever even though he only plays on his 360 these days.

That was a about 2-3 years ago.

I think the Portal games are quite a good recommendation. I wouldn't say they were 'educational', but they reward creative thinking and are quite humorous in places. Portal 2 even has a co-op mode so potentially you could play with him, if you wished.

Only downside is some of the early levels may be a bit too enclosed if he wants to do a lot of roaming.

Haven't played it myself but Rust seems like a decent shout. Not sure of the age certifications though, just heard stuff about it and seen screenshots.

My nephew plays minecraft offline mostly

I will say stuntcarracer. Super old game but all time classic and it still works I believe. Its only multiplayer locally

As you don't seem too worried about game content, in terms of good open world games I would go with Skyrim, Fallout 3 and possibly farcry 3.

I say possibly because farcry has a lot of violence, swearing, drug use and mild nudity (top half). But as you mentioned GTA it's not much different.

Skyrim would be perfect due to the magic/fantasy aspect.

The Hunter, Minecraft or better yet, buy him one of those adventure books where you roll dice and have to turn to certain pages when you make choices.

You'd be surprised how much fun you can have with the latter and it gets you doing stuff together away from the computer.
