Suggest replacement fan

I'm not sure to be honest I'd need to google the model - I'm just looking for something reliable that won't fail after a few months. It's not a souped up PC which needs extra cooling, I just don't want to buy another used one off ebay and it packs in again.

If it is a Dell Optiplex GX280 as per the ebay link. Then it's a LGA775 socket, this cooler will fit

You need to confirm exactly what cpu socket it is to be 100% sure

Sorry, I'm a bit of a layman with this. I've bit the bullet and ordered the fan, the one in the computer is indeed the one in the ebay link.

I tried the computer with the fan disconnected and everything worked fine, crossing my finger that this will sort it.

So, some things that'll help us help you are: can you clarify, do you want a fan or the entire heatsink arrangement? Presumably the latter, but it's not clear to me at least. And: given the confusion over the new one you've already ordered, it'd be a good idea to state what exact motherboard is inside this thing.

Also, and by way of disclaimer I'm only just back in to building PCs after a 9 year absence, but that 5-pin slot the old busted fan was jacked in to, I don't think that's a regular fan slot. At least on my new mobo the 5 pins are called "ext fan" and none of my case or cooler fans will go there. There may be other 3 or 4 pin fan connectors on the board. I could be wrong on this though.

It's the full hearsync I want as suggested. Any way that I can get the details of motherboard without switching the thing on?

Apparently it was released 2004

Random 775 socket: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775#/media/File:CPU_Socket_LGA775(T).JPG

Customised board for dell seems likely.

Sometimes you also get custom connections for usb, sound, fans, front panel lights and switches.

I think you're stuck with the original cooling system if you don't go the whole hog and replace the computer.

Just to be sure this is the computer?:

That is definitely the computer!

Well it's not a big case and it has non-standard holes. Plus it's designed for that cooler because of the bad ventilation.

I'd stick to the original coolers and look for a cheap replacement computer.

this make sound stupid, but reapply thermal paste when you refit the heatsink. *disclaimer: i dont know how much you know about building pcs, if this is obvious please ignore

edit:

Nevermind, the fan in that heatsink looks very proprietary to work with the specific shape. So can't just replace that easily.
