I'm sure this is going to be a 'how long is a piece of string' type of thread but bear with me.

I've got my laptop dual boot with OpenSUSE 10.3 and Windows 2000. I've a 40Gb HDD which is currently like this:

9.9Gb NTFS (Win 2000)
500Mb /swap
16.6Gb /home
10.7Gb /

I know that the swap file is about right but my /home partition is surely too big? I was thing about 4Gb perhaps?

I'm also thinking of resizing the NTFS partition to 20Gb. Is 20Gb enough for a standard linux install, I'll probably be only using the software that came with OpenSUSE.

Slightly more than a piece of string :p
A standard Linux install really ought to be under 10gigs without thinking about it, I'd not be happy with anything over 1-2gigs, but I only keep a relative minimum of stuff around.

/ should be able to get away with 5gigs or less, have a look at the current install size (From memory, I believe it to be about 3gigs for OpenSuSE) and add 2gigs for temp, but this will depend as to whether you chose to install every available application etc.

/home is always one of those things which depends on the user. I personally keep /home to about 100mb and store everything else under /mnt/media, but its equally valid to keep the whole lot as /home
There will be absolutely no effect whatever you do, so set it up the way you feel comfortable with :)

Another minor thought- It may be worth getting an entirely separate drive to dump Windows on, S/H 20gig drives can be had for peanuts on here, and I prefer to keep Windows & Linux on separate disks for ease of nuking.
