I have to come up with a solution for this problem for college need to know to use excel or access

there will be a list

motor manufacture ( ie ford,kia,bmw) / year / colour / location

i will need to lookup and recall data so u guess access > excel ?

ok how many tables do i need for this data

motor_manufacture,model, year,colour,location

i need t be able to ask the DB say " ford, model focus, 1999" and have it show me what colour and location on the veihcle.

I am right in thinking just one?

If you are going the DB route, which is probably better given the number of records, you need to remove redundancy [repeated data]

With just one table you would have:

Manufacturer Model Year Colour Location

Ford Focus 2000 Blue Manchester
Ford Focus 2000 Red London
Ford Focus 2002 Red London
VW Golf 2005 Blue Manchester

Lots of repeated data there. In a normalised database, you would separate repeating data out into their own tables.

As my knowledge of this process is a little rusty [been a few years since I have had to do it] I wont embarrass myself by attempting to work out the tables and relationships :p

I think everything that needs to be said has already been said i.e. whilst you could do it in excel access would be much better.

Make sure to follow sirius' advice. I think anything else would constitute us doing your coursework for you.

so roughly like this

table-manufactures

ford
bmw
audi

etc

table models

bmw, 316,318,320 etc
ford focus,ka,mondeo etc

table

colour
