Suggestions for gaming headphones

I'm in the market for some headphones; their only use is going to be for gaming so a "gaming headset" is probably going to be my best bet. Although i'd like to get some HD595s, they lack 5.1 surround sound and a microphone. Plus, i'm not exactly an audiophile so chances are i'm not going to tell much of a difference in sound quality between your average gaming headphones and something from Sennheiser.

So, out of all the gaming headsets available, which would be the best?

Also, bear in mind i'm running 32-bit Vista using onboard sound; i'd also like to invest in a sound card pretty soon. Price isn't really a factor here, i just want something descent (since i'm likely to have it for a while) which will be compatible with Vista.

Thank you for your replies. I know that there are a lot of issues with Creative sounds cards and Vista, but how is Razer's sound card with it? If that's the only sound card which will work properly, then i guess i'll have to get the, what i think are, overpriced Razer headphones. I don't really want to have to go down this route because other headphones won't be compatible with the sound card.

Is there any point getting the Medusas with the Amplifier over the normal version; would it be possible to connect some 5.1 speakers up to the amp, too?

I'm also considering a lot of the headphones Sennheiser headphones in their Pro-Gaming range, however these are very small and i imagine they wouldn't be as comfortable as some of the large ones mentioned above.

Any more suggestions?

I have the SteelSeries SteelSound 5H v2, and am very happy with them. They are great for games, but be warned they aren't quite as good with music and movies!

Grr, just as i made my mind up on the Speedlink Medusas!

Hehe, thank you for your input. I think i'm going to choose between the Steelseries Steelsound 5H v2, Medusas and the Razer Barracudas. Am i right in thinking the Steelsound headphones are just stereo? If so, i think i'm going to have to rule it out since having 5.1 surround sound will probably be better for gaming.

I'm going to be ordering in a minute; i just can't really decide which of the 3 headphones above to get.

I've gone with the Medusas, mainly because they come with an amp which will allow me to plug my speakers into it so i won't have to keep reaching down to the back of my computer everytime i want to use the headphones.

Since i'm only going to be gaming, i think the Medusas are probably the best solution for me (due to the mic and amp), plus they're pretty cheap. I'll probably get some descent stereo headphones sometime down the road but since i'm going to be using onboard sound for a few more months i don't see the point in getting them... yet.

i have the SpeedLink Medusa SL-8796 5.1 Home Edition + 5.1 Amplifier they are awsome, only issue with them is interferance with my mobile phone, i have the older amp with mine, i purchased them about 16 months ago,sound and mic are very clear,came with all the wires id ever need too. They still going strong after all this time and been dropped several times too lol

Yay, thank you for your input. I was beginning to get second thoughts about getting them. They should arrive tomorrow; i'll tell you what i think of them if they do.
