Suggestions for rules for OcUK's Top 20 of all time (again)

Whilst I do think the longevity of a game should be a factor in judging it's position in an all time list it would probably be too difficult to work out a fair system to take that into account.

I agree that votes should be for each specific game and not a series though.

1, Deus Ex
2, Fallout 3
3, F.E.A.R
4, Stalker SOC
5, Farcry
6, Stalker Clear Sky

Would have to think a bit harder after that. The episodes 2 + 3 of Half Life 2 are also very good. Somewhere in there I'd also chuck in Quake 1 and all the mission packs. Also Bioshock was pretty good.

so all formats..? cool so Nintendo 64, Amiga, Atari ST, Spectrum, Playstation, Megadrive, neo Geo, Dreamcast, Acorn electron...etc?

Arcade machine versions as well?

:)

Yeah definately :) It's best 'game' full stop. I've got an arcade exclusive in mine that nobody's ever heard of!! Gotta go in my top five though, awesome memories, still play it and i'm sure it's in my top five most played.

I reckon age group would have been an interesting Metric as whilst there are no doubt technically superior games such as COD4 which did feature in my list there are the older games that were so compelling when I was young that would play for hours and hours.

I disagree, games should be judged purely on merit and not get extra weighting simply because of their age. Lets be honest here, Elite would clean up :)

I agree with this. I understand if people don't want to see Call of Duty 4, Gears of War 2 and Fifa 09' dominating the results. At the moment though it does seem that people are choosing a balanced selection. If anything the old games are winning particularly around the N64, PS1 era.

Glad to see you've adopted a pts system based on higher numbers as that serves to recognise the fact that there isn't much to choose between the top 5 games of all time across all formats (I'm kinda disappointed it's not PC-only, but I guess at least this means less work for you :) )

Other 'top X games' votes I've seen appear to deal with the sequels issue on a game-by-game basis, depending on how different the games are. So a vote for, say, Doom 1 would be counted with the votes for Doom 2 as they're very similar games. However, a vote for GTA (the original) wouldn't count the same as GTA 4 as you wouldn't even recognise them as being related.
Unfortunately that only really works if you're all in a room together deciding, so I vote it's done on a game-by-game basis. Might not be fair to GTAs, but doing on a franchise basis gives rise to problems with games like Half-Life 2 and Portal (they're utterly different, but share story elements) , or Crysis and Far Cry 2 (both essentially sequels to the same game, if very different). Plus, with franchises there's usually one that stands out that would be voted for anyway.
Edit - nice to see this back btw

I found that the approach mentioned above (game-by-game basis) would actually help in some cases, for example I really like the Championship/Football Manager series of games. There are nearly 20 different versions made by sigames of what is basically the same game and IMO would be a prime candidate for grouping together. I voted for CM97/98 (in line with the rules) but the fact is that I'd be happy to see pretty much any version do well. I'd wager that FM2009 is likely the best, but as I haven't got it yet, I can't judge.

Of course, it's all a bit too subjective deciding what sequels should be grouped, and what are different enough to be judged seperately.

Somewhat surprised to see so few votes for Far Cry so far, I haven't counted but skimming down the second page I think F.E.A.R. is more popular.
