Hi Guys,

I'm trying to build a new PC for around the 700 - 750 mark. My laptops graphics card went about 5 months ago and I haven't had the money to replace it. Now I need a good PC for running VMWare and general gaming @ 1680x1050 / 1366x768. Here are the Specs I've come up with so far:

Q6600
P5K-E/Wifi
4gb (2x2) Corsair xms2 6400
Xpertvision 8800GT
Samsung T 500gb
P182
Tuniq Tower
Corsair HX 620

£737.51

Thats what I've been looking at so far. I've had it suggested that I change the Motherboard for the Gigabyte DS3R which would bring the price down by about £25. I plan to put more ram in later as I'm going to be running lots of virtual machines. I'm also planning to put a 9 series in later once they come out. I could also change the Samsung for the WD AA.. whatever its called or the 750gb F1 if they would be better. I could also swap the ram for OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2048) Reaper HPC at the same price.

So any suggestions? Is the 620w HX better then the 650w TX? How much power will I realistically need with one card? Also, what sort of overclock do you think I could reach using these boards?

Any help you could provide would be great.

Thanks guys,
Aron

Welcome to the forums, your options look basically sound there.

The Samsung F1 drives are supposed to be very very quick but 750gb is quite a lot of data to risk to a single drive, it isn't that I doubt their reliability but it is a point to consider. I imagine the other drive you are thinking of would be the Western Digital AAKS series, also very quick.

The HX 620w is modular which makes it a bit easier to keep tidy since you simply don't plug in cables that you don't need and it is on offer this week so I would go for it over the TX 650w but it is pretty marginal. You could use any decent PSU of 450w+ but given the price of the HX 620w at the moment I think you might as well go for it.

As for overclock, it is difficult to predict accurately but I'd suggest aiming for 3ghz+ and then seeing from there.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I'll be running Vista ultimate 64bit for the main operating system. I think I might swap the Samsung HD for the WD as from what I've read they are cooler and quieter. I'll stick with the 620w corsair as what I've read they are very good. Not sure what to do about the motherboard though as they are both good but I'm tempted to go with the DS3R to save the extra bit of money which could be spent elsewhere although thw Asus does have 2x pci-e which would allow me to add another monitor at some point.

How about cable lengths etc? Will everything fit a P182? And how about noise? I will buy more silent fans etc at a later date but will the components I've chosen be resonably quiet?

Ok revised my spec slightly.

Q6600 G0
P5K-E/Wifi \ DS3P
4gb (2x2) Corsair xms2 6400
Xpertvision 8800GT \ 8800GTS 512mb
500gb WD AAKS
P182
Tuniq Tower
Corsair HX 620

I'm Still don't know which mobo to go for. Also don't know which graphics card.

8800 = £767
8800 GTS = 820

I don't think that the 8800 series' drivers are as optimised on vista 64 as ati offerings.

You not considered the 3800 series or even 3 weeks away the 3870x2?

The cables are a bit funny in the P18x series of case (I have the P180). Essentially the PSU is at the bottom of the case, so either you get extension cable, or the motherboard power cables will go across the motherboard.

Otherwise spec looks good.

Ok so I finally finalised my build and ordered the components tonight.
So my new build has the following:

Q6600 G0
Asus P5K-E\Wifi AP
WD 500gb AAKS
4GB (2x2G) Corsair XMS2 800
Palit 8800 GT
Antec P182
Corsair HX 620w
Tuniq Tower
LG 20x DVD Writer

Can't wait for it all to arrive now so I can build it :)

Just recieved my carbon fibre G7 mouse today as well. Got it for £35 of Amazon as it was B grade.

Now just got to decide on a monitor. Was going to buy the Samsung 22" but I'm considering the 24" Samsung. Guess I'll see how I feel come payday on Friday :).
