Suggestions on upgrading graphics from AMD HD4800?

Was just doing some work on my wife's computer, which is now about 6 ears old and thought it was about time I upgraded her graphics card. She doesn't play any intensive games just World Of Warcraft but even though that game doesn't exactly push the graphics boundaries she still has to play on fairly low settings.

Computer spec is as follows:

Asus M5A987 Pro Motherboard
AMD FX-4100 Quad Core CPU
4Gb Ram
AMD Radeon HD4800 Graphics Card

So although the PC is a few years old it should be fine for World Of Warcraft if I replace the graphics card. Thing is I have been out of the loop for a while so need to know what would be a good replacement and not too expensive..given what she will use it for?

Thanks

Saul

Many thanks for the suggestions. Yes it will be 1920x1080. She has a 27" screen but that is the max it goes to.

+1 to the 460 if you want it cheap, will still perform better than the 4800 series cards.

Is the CPU overclocked? WoW is still CPU bound.

A 460 is a huge upgrade over an HD 4800 series card.

For comparison it's faster than the 4870 X2 which is obviously dual GPU.

Go for it and you'll be upgrading the rest of the system sooner or later. Tbh if I were you I'd get something in the £50-100 range second hand.

Yeah secondhand might be an option but then of course your relying on someone not selling you a dud.

Was wondering if the same upgrade would apply to the 6800 I have in my pc. Same spec as my wife's but 16Gb ram and again the cpu is not overclocked.

It certainly would. Have a look at the big hierarchy chart:

Your 68xx is now more than six years old. A 6850 for example is comparable to the integrated graphics on the newer Intel CPUs.

I reckon a 6850 to a 460 would net 50-100% more performance. A 460 is maybe 10% off an Nvidia 950, which is about twice as quick as a 6850. Note that the rest of your PC might be the limiting factor.

Wow where did all those years go!

I used to be one of those people who always bought the latest thing but since moving to the mac for most of my work I have let the PC side of things slide. Like my wife I only play WoW on the pc and can have the settings pretty much maxed out before it starts to struggle. Not that max graphics in WoW actually amount to much of course ;)

Thanks for the link. I won't feel so lost when comparing cards now :)

What Resolution does she play at?

Assuming it's 1920x1080 or below, then an RX460 should be fine - if you can stretch to it though, a RX470 is quite a bit more powerful and should be good for a while to come:

+1 for the 470. That card is an absolute gem for the money.
