Having killed my netbook I'm back on my desktop (ca. 2003) which seems not to want to run any Ubuntu later than 8.04 
Usage on the netbook was mainly web surfing, downloading and some web design (horrific on a 10" screen!). Desktop usage will also include some gaming (low spec like UrT and ET), graphics work and video editing.
I liked having something by the sofa to surf and the netbook was great for that, but underpowered sometimes.
A few questions:
I've been out of the hardware loop for some time now and am overwhelmed by how much I've missed.

- Do I go for the desktop or the portable first?
- Netbook or tablet? If tablet, is Android up to the job?
- What kind of spec desktop should I be looking at? Do I really need an i7 over an i5, etc?
