When it comes to CPU coolers I am a n00b about it, never really paid much attention to it, ive always stuck to the stock cooler that came with the chip, but after an overheat shutdown I need to look into one, but cant work out whats good and whats not, the reviews on the main site dont really help either

I have an AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor

I have looked at this, but the reviews are mixed for it, not to mention that the fan blows down into the system where I may end up putting a GFX to replace the onboard im currently using Mobo I have if that helps

Any help with choices or advice on which way to go with coolers I would be appreciative,

Oh the case is a Xigmatek Asgard Midi Tower Case, which appears to have plenty of space for stuff like this.

look at their specs for something called CFM this is the airflow that the CPU cooler makes. general rule is the higher this is the better but also the more noisy

Are you overclocking? What is your budget?

I have a quad phenom II and use the thermolab baram with an akasa apache 120mm fan. Works very well. You wont need something as high end as that if you are not overclocking though.

If your only planning on doing mild overclocks ie 3.4 to 3.8, then a budget tower cooler such as the coolermaster hyper 212 plus may be worth a look.

It will mount so air is pushed front to back. It is quite hefty but fits inside my coolermaster elite 335 case just, so I think yours will be fine too!

You have to remove the blue AMD retainer bracket and have acess to the back of the motherboard to install the custom retention plate you get with the cooler.

It is pretty much silent at idle, and audible at high loads. But it beats the stock cooler for cooling and noise! I got around max load of 46 degrees on stock with this cooler.

thanks teddy, just the information I was after in terms of postioning and cooling of the system, and thats a dam sight cooler than what the stock cooler gets to.

It does idel for a fair amount of the time, but when its under load i wont mind a bit of noise as long as it keeps everything cool and the air flow moving nicely.

Its not overclocked at the moment as im batterling a lovely memory management issue with windows 7, but once ive solved that ill be looking at doing some low range overclocking to probably 3.6-3.8, maybe push it to 4

Thank you for the help, im sure ill have some more questions in the long run.
