Suit brand hierarchy

Anyone know about men's suits?
What are low, medium, and high quality brands? Or should I go independent?
Is it possible to get a good suit for less than £500?

Thanks for the suit-tips everyone. I'll have a look at Slaters and M&S, and then certainly find a tailor to get it properly fitted.
