I basically play

bf2
cod4
oblivion with image inhancing modifications (texture packs etc)

whats the minimum card to run all of these maxed out, including maxed out in nvidia / ati control panel not-in-game ??

Thankypoo's

Depends on what kind of "max" you have in mind. Max in-game settings and 4xAA or AA application controlled and 8xAF then yes.

If you crank up 16xAA/16xAF even an o/ced 8800GTX will struggle in certain maps with a lot of grass or intense actions.

just did 3 runs of a demo I've recorded in multiplayer running my 3850pro @ 777,1098. 1680x1050 2xAA, max details, max quality in CCC

Min, Max, Avg
33.67, 91.33, 49.73

i get max settings for it at that res on my stock OCed 3870... anything 9600GT/3870 + will be able to pull it off... what's the rest of your system like?

(CCC defaults, 4x ingame AA)

There is no way, a single card will max this game, I have tried with a 3870x2 (900/2200 and a 6300 overclocked to 3.6ghz (515fsb)
32x AA and 16x AS and all the sliders on max and in game. it grinds to single figures at times.
Nothing wrong with my machine neither as I get nearly 52fps on the normal crysis test and nearly 16k 3dmark06 (8.3 Vista x64).
I have another card coming for tri SLI for this exact reason to see if I can max it.
I cant speak for quad cores, but I have such a high FSB and mem speed so it brings me to about the level of a 3.4ghz Quad. or thereabouts.
This is an X38 board aswell, which in my findings a tad faster than P35, but not a lot, certainly overclocks higher as I am nearly stable at 3.7ghz

I know, but the poster said max settings on all sliders, for the record it wont run at 24x, 16x is playable but not really.
More like 8x with all other sliders maxed.
I must add the GX2 might, not tried it, so cant comment.

No chance you will get a constant 60fps+ at max settings with ANY card available for those games.

But pull down the AA\AF and a "modest" 8800 GTS will do it at 1920x1200.

tbh im running at 1280x1024 and iv not got any processor overclocks running atm so its a 1.8 e4300, iv got a 320 8800GTS and thats overclocked quite well SOMETIMES, but i always play on fairly high settings and get an extremely smooth fps, and i used to be ANAL about my fps in cs 1.6days.
Imagine a new GT or GTS would cut through it like butter, unless you did ram sliders up, but to be honest.. would you notice the difference? thats what you have got to ask yourself.

Set the AA to Application Controlled and AF to 16 and all other GFX and in game settings to max. The game doesnt look any better ay above x4 AA on my screen but i am at 1920x1200.

I dont agree there! I have a GTX which is overclocked to 630/1520/2000 and it cuts through textures like butter at HQ textures no optimisations at 16xAF forced in control panel. The GTX benefits because of its 384bit memory interface, textures dont really bother it, its AA especially quality or true multisampling AA that kill it at higher res. To be honest I dont really notice any visiual difference between 4 and 8xQ at 1680x1050. I can run COD4 though at HQ 16xAF and 8xQ AA at 1680x1050 no bother!, overiding game settings in nVidia cp (all game settings are maxed out anyway) Go for a GTX OC value and OC that baby to BFG OC2 speeds! 626/1450/2000 its a steal! :D I can also run Crysis at again max textures (HQ 16xAF) and no AA at 1680x1050 at a respectible 35fps ;) Happy gaming!

My 2900XT runs the game fine maxed at those settings but only with max in game AA on. I leave CCC at application preference for all games that can use their own Anti-Aliasing. To be honest I notice absolutely zero difference between 6X or 24X AA while playing games. Waste of money to worry about.

2900XT = 3870 so just pick up one of those and you'll be sorted. Or pay a little more for 8800GT which will run it a bit better.
