Good day all.

I am working on fixing a computer for a friend, it's there son's computer.
It looks to have failed memory on the video card.
When you power up the computer you just get a screen full of random colours and random chars across the whole screen.

I have pulled the video card from there computer, and tried it in my own computer, and still get the same, so I know the fault is with the video card.

The old video card was an XFX 9600 GSO 384MB.

The above video card ran all the games fine, so don't need any super video cards as a replacement.

What would a suitable replacement be in the current line of NVidia video cards?

Thanks for your time.

Best Regards.

His computer is very old in my eyes, but it did do everything he needed.

Without a working video card, I can't see the full specs, but the motherboard is a: Foxconn NF4SLI7AA-8KRS2.

As said in my 1st post he is not after the latest gaming card, he really just need a new card that is equal or grater then his dead XFX 9600 GSO 384MB.

Looking on Wiki I found the following specs for the Nvidia 9600 GSO.

Bus interface: PCIe 2.0 x16.
Memory: 384MB.
Core config: 96:48:12.
Core Clock Rate: 550Mhz.
Shader Clock Rate: 1375Mhz.
Memory Clock Rate: 1600Mhz.

Honestly, I had no idea about performance. It's just if the 9600GSO is kaput then a replacement is needed for the time being.

Maybe a GT640 then /shrug. That seems to be the closest performance.

640 would seem like a better option to me, a bit faster than a 9600GSO but even the 630 would be slower than the original card :S

Might be worthwhile trying the bay for a second hand 8800GT/9800GT or similar. Seems pointless spending anymore than you need to on such an old system.

i would recommend you to find a cheap second hand 8800GTX on ebay. it would be faster than your old card and better than most of the cheap cards you can buy

Whoa! Steady on there old chap. The 8800GTX uses a fair chunk of extra power over a 9600GSO. We don't want the op coming back in a couple of weeks time asking for advice on a new PSU ;)

They're also significantly larger (2 slots), longer and run hotter, all of which could pose a problem depending on the ops friends case.

Could the 9600 be baked in the oven for 10mins @200C, just like my (and other owners') 8800 GTS 512 (having removed the HSF)? Cured artifacts 4 times for me over the space of the last ~12months, only upgraded to a 7970 Matrix this week.

Maybe time to junk the PC(especially the PSU unless you like fireworks) and start afresh? Maybe not going for a £1000+ PC build but something that'll be cheap and cheerful and not just chepcheapcheap.....
