I have a million weddings this year and I want a new suit. There is bugger all around here, it's useless. I could do with one by April really as that's the first wedding.

Can you get made to measure without going in? Where in London is good? Could I get my measurements done and then send them I'm thinking?

I'm weighing up the off the shelf vs. custom job and would be nice to have a decent 3 piece made.

Anyone have experience in such things?

I normally go to our local gentlemans outfitters, pricey for round here but then for the sake of getting a well fitted qood quality off the shelf suit in the space of half an hour with zero stress its worth it

When i get to the stage where i have lost the weight i want to loose, i plan to have a suit made to fit perfectly. Until then i don't fancy spending the money for something that will only fit for a little while.

I don't think you can get anything good made bespoke without getting fitted. Part of the bespoke process involved several fittings so that they can get your pattern. After reading http://www.permanentstyle.co.uk/ he recommends a few bespoke tailors including Graham Brown (http://www.grahambrowne.co.uk/) which is quite a bit cheaper than anyone Savile Row (~£1200 versus ~£2.5k+).

One level down from bespoke is 'made to measure'. These are where your measurements are taken and you get a suit from an existing pattern that matches that as closely as possible. There are a few people that do this but in my mind you're better off getting a well made, off the rack suit adjusted by a tailor (which is quite cheap for things like shortening of sleeves) than a cheap made to measure suit.

Good information and valid point. I'll have a look at Graham, thanks!

Wherever you buy it, either get them to adjust it or find a tailors. Fit is everything. Fit. Fit. Fit.

I'm personally a big fan of Charles Tyrwhitt. For the price, they're pretty decent. Always discount codes going around.

This - CT. Their returns are superb too.

If you do want something flashy then get down to Jermyn Street and get it made. A suit fitting can take 2 or three trips though, expect to pay about £800.

I've heard good things about some Chinese tailors on the interweb but I couldn't personally recommend any....they do expect a decent fitting/measurements though.

I have a G&H suit, several TM L, CT and M&S suits. I prefer the M&S for every day wear when sitting in an office.

I buy a not so expensive suit off the shelf and get it fitted. I found it looks better than my customer made suits I had in the past.

Anything from £300 to £500 will buy quite a nice one.

There is a jaeger outlet outlet at J29 of the M1 which has good suits and they are often reduced from £400 down to £120 ish. To be quite honest its just as nice as any boss suit I have bought at 1/3 of the price.

lots of places will get their suits made at the same manufacturer as other brands i.e. an M&S suit can end up coming off the same production line as some designer brand. *

Basically brand names are pointless with suits, if you're going to pay $$$ then get a bespoke one otherwise go with whichever suit fits best (obviously assuming it is at least made from wool, isn't fused etc..). so no point saying go to CT or TM Lewin or M&S etc.. what fits someone else well might not be so great for you, go to a few places. Obviously you can get things adjusted too.

*FWIW they're generally very good value
