As I'm going to be off uni for the summer months, I've decided to look into getting a 2nd part time job (I already work 20hrs a week in my current job).

I'm thinking somewhere temporary, as I only wish to work for July, August (and maybe June). Somewhere like a clothes shop - probably even better if its a school uniform shop as it will be extra busy during summer.

My local shops do not have a website, nor email so it will be a case of phoning, visiting, or writing to ask if there will be any jobs in the summer. Right now I'm planning on writing to them asking if they will likely require temporary staff throughout summer? Do you reckon thats the best way - the shops regularly cater for the older generation so I can't just pop in and browse!

How would I go about asking without sounding too desperate? (which I'm not!)

Cheers

Try round some places who do car park attendants or security. You can usually just call up and they'll tell you whats available for that week and you can pick what you want.

If it's customer-facing I'd recommend walking in and asking, thereby giving the manager an instant impression of you regarding your appearance and showing that you aren't afraid of approaching unknown people and engaging in conversation. Not to mention you will probably get an instant response.

Yeah, I was thinking that would be better but it also puts them on a spot. I know the owner of one of the shops as a customer in my current job - I guess I will ask him when I see him if he needs any staff for the summer period.

I'm still really tempted to send out a few letters tho - do you reckon this is totally the wrong way to go about it? I could always wait until they advertise but in previous years I have never seen 1 employment advert from any such shop in my town!

Sorry to reply to my own post, but during a boring nightshift I drafted up a letter to send to some local clothing shops. Could someone please look over this and tell me what they think?!

I'm aiming to target the shops that sell schoolwear as they will most likely need someone to help out over a few months in the summer by the way.

Also do you think its too soon to be approaching shops about summer work?

Thanks!

Is there an employment agency around you at all? If so, I'd recommend going in and seeing what they have to offer. They quite often have positions available for summer work, and generally pay better than a high street store would.
If you want to work in a store, just go in and ask at the counter if there are any summer positions available. To be honest, it doesn't look very good from the retaillers perspective if you don't even want to step into the shop to ask.

I worked for a Lloyd's Underwriting and holdings company last summer. The jobs pretty good, although a lot of the time we spent watching the cricket ;). The pays good and the people are friendly :). And its also good for UCAS and CV etc to say you've had previous work experience, as well as useful for references.
