Summer Transfer Thread 24/25

Think this is a good signing for Liverpool, dare I say a good bit of business ;)

Really would have liked it if Utd would have been in for him as part of a potential the Sancho sale to Juve. Que Sera Sera

Chiesa offers something different where the Prem loves 'inverted wingers' He can play on the inside and also take players on the outside. By all accounts he has high standards, hard worker and was part of the Juve leadership group so no doubt will have a bit of character about him.

Fair play to LFC for getting this one in the bag.

If he's so good how come he's so cheap and apparently very few others were interested? Genuine question.
Could be many reasons.

A lot of teams are stacked with wingers. I mean Chelsea have 7 or 10. He isn't going to break into Madrid side, Barca wanted but cant afford to turn the lights on, City, Arsenal, Spurs are stacked. Dare I say there really is only the two Milan teams in Italy who could afford him, but again do they need him.

Chiesa 4 years ago was a £80m player. He done his ACL and missed pretty much all of 2022 and while still a very good player, hasn't hit the heights he had before his injury. His price is reflective of his contract situation (just 1 year left), his salary and the risk due to possible injury issues.

As for why there's not a big queue of clubs after him, I read yesterday that Juve had been asking for over £25m initially but also it's down to the needs of other clubs. There's not really a massive list of top clubs signing wide attackers this summer and how many of them are in a position to take a bit of a gamble? We're in a bit of a unique position where we want another wide player but at the same time aren't in a desperate situation where we'd be relying on him and as such can afford to gamble a bit. As I saw somebody say yesterday, had he been signed as 1 of 4 forwards for Liverpool it makes a lot less sense than him being 1 of 6. If he picks up a niggle here or there it's not going to be the end of the world for us.

I guess because he's a risk and has never really reached his peak since his ACL injury. We're in an unusual position in that it's a risk we can afford, both financially and on the pitch. Financially we've made a ton through recent sales. On the pitch, if things go brilliantly he's the replacement for Mo. If he's ok, he fills in as and when across the front line. If badly, we lose out on about £30mil over the course of his contract, but given this summer's sales we can absorb that.

A lot of other clubs who may afford him either can't risk it financially, or need someone they can rely on to take a first team spot immediately

Thankfully 4 years is a long time and some players never hit the same levels ever again after a big injury. We can but hope.

He still done fairly well last season. A goal or assist every 180 odd minutes in the League (190 in all comps), compares favourably to any Utd wide player and even Diaz for us. Playing in a more open & expansive set-up and League will hopefully boost those numbers too.

Barca (+ a few other Spanish sides) are trying to hijack Bajcetic's loan to Salzburg. Talk of a hefty loan fee from Barca but I'd be seriously concerned about sending him there without massive penalty clauses for a lack of game time. They're a mental football club and he could go there and waste 12 months of his career. Salzburg, even without a big loan fee, makes so much more sense for him and us.

This! Plus Salzburg likely to actually play him which is what he needs

I’d rather his loan was in a premier league side though so he got good game time in our league

Thankfully it looks like he's off to Salzburg.

I really rate him but having missed 18 months of football, he needs regular football and he wasn't going to get that for us this season. Going to Salzburg, under Pep is the best place for him and hopefully he comes back in 12 months and is ready to kick on with us.

Morton's proposed move to Leverkusen seems to have fallen through. It's still possible that he could move before the deadline but I wonder with Bajcetic leaving whether we keep him around as emergency cover. It's not ideal for him but we feel a tad light in midfield with Bajcetic leaving. There's a lot of talk about Nyoni but he's still very much a kid and is built like a kid too. While I don't think Morton will ever be good enough for us long term (unlike the other two), he's probably more physically ready to do a job in the short term. Not playing for 12 months will kill the value he's built up over the last couple of seasons though.
