Summer Transfer Window 2021/2022

You could say the same about Maguire/Wan Bissaka if it's true though. For starting 11 players to be behind fringe/bench players seems criminal.

Surprised Lingard isn't on more, i'd have thought someone mid table would've been able to afford those wages for him.

All depends when they got their contract and what they were on before. Maguire is exactly where I thought he would be. I assume you are referring to Martial being paid more than him. Again, thats correct. Martial has been on far too much money for far too long and it bears no relevance to his form or performance. He is fantastically talented but doesn't apply himself and has a bad attitude but the club were petrified of losing him and then he goes and does the business elsewhere. Hence his wages.

AwB wasn't a guaranteed starter when bought and he was young.

The wages IronSpider posted for Rice etc are complete BS. Even a half decent PL player at a smaller club will be on £40k/week or more.

Griezmann is up there with sanchez and Torres as the worst signing of all time.

Torres and to an even greater extent Sanchez cannot hold a candle to Griezmann. They paid £100m for him and paid him £600k/week for 2 years. Hes back at AM now on a free loan and they still have to figure out what they are doing with him next season.

Not these days

Yes these days. Defenders don't command anything like the money attacking players do and there are far far fewer truly elite defenders around.

Another transfer window goes by starting with me certain that we'll by a player for a particular position and Klopp again choosing not to. At the start of the window I was convinced we'd sign another midfielder and while I still think we could have, I am a bit more relaxed about it than I thought I would be. Part of the reason for wanting a CM was undoubtedly due to the madness of last season and wanting to have 1 too many midfielders than 1 too few. When you look at it rationally, Hendo, Fab, Thiago, Milner, Keita, Ox & Jones should be enough midfield options and that's before you throw Elliott into the mix, who I thought may have gone on loan again and certainly didn't consider as a midfielder. I always felt another forward would only come in if the club managed to shift the likes of Origi and Minamino so I'm not massively surprised there, although another Jota/Mane type would have been nice - in fact, that 5th top class attacking option is probably all our squad needs to be 100% compete. Thankfully AFCON's been nice to us, with Salah and Mane only likely to be missing for a maximum of 2 League games and both (on paper) very winnable games.

we talking transfer fee or wages?

VVD, miguer, stone, Ben White etc all cost more than most midfielders/strikers that united/liverpool/city/Arsenal paid for respectively

Both. Still.

VVD £75m
Maguire £80m
White £50m
Citys entire defence + duplicates and triplicates ~£50m each

Neymar £198m
Mbappe £163m
Couthinho £105m
Felix £104m
Griezmann £107m
Grealish £100m
Lukaku £97.5m

I could continue.

In the top 20 largest transfers ever, 18/20 are midfielders or forwards. Out of the top 20, 15 are forwards.

Defenders don't get paid as much and don't cost as much. That has always been the case. You don't win fans with your defenders. Most kids don't grow up wanting to be VvD or Maguire, they want to be Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, Rooney etc.

Sanchez screwed up the wage structure at Utd as well though and caused issues in the dressing room. Theres actually be a few big money transfers that have failed. Even going back as far as say Veron at Utd. Coutinho, Pogba was WR and hasn't be an success and are away to lose him on a free next summer. AdM, Hazard, Dembele, Higuain, Pepe etc hard to rank them really but Griezmann might actually be the worst.

DDG has been the best paid player in the premier league for years now, only just recently been top by Viva Ronaldo...

I think defenders and keepers are starting to be more appreciated in general as well, think on the whole (myself included) are starting to realise how fundamental they are to a team. Kepa and Alison both broke the WR for keepers in the same window IIRC
