Summer Transfer Window 23/24

Wonder if the Thiago rumours from yesterday might be true then, maybe losing him is the trigger for going big on Caicedo.

If it comes off, it’s a great deal, certainly better than the 50 mil on Lavia.

He's really going to Bayern isn't he.

Yes?

There is no doubt in my mind that he will, Bayen spent all summer chasing him. They wouldn't have wasted their time if they knew the player was against the move from the start. So they must have known through some 3rd party that he is open to the idea should the bid be accepted.

That seems logical to me.

What is illogical is if they didn't do their homework and spent the summer chasing a player that was never going to leave.

We may aswell get Dunk,Ferguson and Mitoma whilst we are at it. Enciso doesn’t look too bad either

I'm torn on Caicedo and that fee.

Good DMs are very few and far between hence the fee paid for him and Rice. Lavia is nowhere near Caicedo's level now, but in 5 years I expect they'll be at a similar standard. Therefore we've essentially paid £60m for the period of time it would have taken Lavia to get up to a level.

I don't have a huge issue with us spending that on Caicedo rather than Bellingham. The circumstances were different when Bellingham moved. Plus, despite his talent Bellingham is very much not a 6 and that's the position in which there is huge scarcity and therefore higher prices in the market. Alexis for £30m was a better buy for that role than Bellingham at 100 to me.

On the whole, the business this summer has been very good. We've basically got rid of 5 (I think) aging midfielders, and bought what was the best midfield in the league last season (aside from City) plus Szoboszlai for a fairly reasonable net spend. The fee for Caicedo worries me, but if that midfield project as a whole comes off then we've played it perfectly.

Anyone watching SSN? :P

They were just interviewing someone and "Joel Essex" must've been off mute as all you can hear is him go "Ahhhhh ****** hell" - hahahaha. Love it.

We got rid of 5 players, in reality with their injury records, we’ve only got rid of 3, so 3 out 3 in. And with Jones and Bacj…Steffen stepping up we should be ok for 2-3 years in the middle.

Thats a big dollop of money for Caicedo, even with him being just 21 years old but its a very good signing and has one big advantage to it. He is used to playing with Mac Allister. So with just days before the season starting the midfield wont need as much bedding in time because its a pairing who already know how to play with each other.

Fees are stupid, but then how long ago did pogba go for that kind of money.

FSG get a lot of grief for moneyball, but they have invested, the forward line has been overhauled hugely. Now the midfield. Defence needs to be sorted in the next 2 windows.

Agree with this. FSG make the occasional odd decision, such as not signing a midfielder a year ago, but broadly they've run the club fantastically and built very intelligently without just spamming money up the wall

Icing on the cake now would be if we threw 50m at Lavia and ended up with all 4 of Lavia , Caicedo, Mac Aliister and Szobozlai, midfield there which could potentially last 10 years together
