Summer Transfer Window 23/24

United chasing Hojberg and Cucurella by the looks of it. Don't really think either player is that great. Shaw injury changes a lot though, does ETH have concerns the midfieldiis strugging at time and doesn't trust McTom?

Cucurella is certainly a very capable player, but he's struggled since leaving Brighton.

I think the pair of them would strengthen our squad, but nothing too exciting.

The Glazers have spent more money then most its how its been spent thats been poor.

That’s down to not having the right people in place, they had ex-bankers do most of it.

There is also the issue of due to massive debt and dividends, they can’t afford to buy players and look for loan options. Which is pathetic for a club the size of United, it’s not exactly loans for 6months to get around FFP. It’s loans so they can keep the cash filling their back pockets.

They’ll no doubt release some statement soon saying they are close to finalising the sale to get the fans off their backs - not that they even give a flying **** about that it’s more down to the negative stuff on X.

Isnt the loans because of FFP though? Some of the blame needs to go on the manager who seemingly struggles to sign a player he hasnt worked with.

It is and it isn’t.

It’s more complicated than that it’s that they have maxed the company credit card so can’t spend anymore.

Their huge debt and serving it, coupled with dividends means they’ve got even less than they should be able to spend and remain clear of FFP.

I think I read it’s almost at £1bn in debt and they’ve also almost paid £1bn in interest. Just for the privilege of being owned by the Glazers.

So before they even start they’ve got two hands behind their backs.

The long and the short of it is though. No Glazers, you and I own the club (or anyone for that matter) and we don’t put a single penny of our own money into the club and don’t take any out. The club wouldn’t be required to make loan signings at this stage. It would still be able to make permanent signings.

It's seems to me very clear united have a very restricted buy budget and ETH is working within constraints. The relative level of the squad has been incredibly poor compared to our rivals so he and the murtough are having to choose wisely on who can make an impact now and gradually improve the overall squad.

Hojlund - Immediate need and solution for first 11. Paid big with the prospect of long term.
Mount - Squad depth, relatively cheap in the grand scheme of buys.
Onana - Immediate need, paid the odds and is a long term solution.
Antony - Immediate need for balance on the right - Known quantity and a prospect for ETH
Casemiro - Opportunistic buy to add leadership and experience in an area we had none. He was integral last year to getting us back into the CL.
Martinez - Speaks for himself.
Malacia - Squad depth, relatively cheap and fits ETH philosophy.

This need for suddenly saying ETH will only buy players he's worked with probably has a level of affordability to risk ratio. He knows them and he knows the impact they can have in the short term and with potential long term. So it's about getting bang for buck now under the fiscal conditions the club is working and gradually raising the squad level in line with his philosophy for play.

Pretending it's as simple as united go out and buy X player is just not a reality this club is operating under with ETH and the glazers.

Cucurella and Hojberg are reactionary but within reason of improving the squad depth without too much financial risk. Potentially very sensible buys and personally i'd bet on Cucurella out performing Shaw. Hojbberg could free up Casemiro again and provide balance in the centre. Plenty of midfields have unsung hero's who free up others to do their thing. We don't have one of those at the moment, we have poor CM options who are liabilities on and off the ball.

I forgot all about Malacia, what's the deal with him?

He didn't buy Maguire, Di Maria, 40yr old Ronaldo etc

Most of ETHs buys have been OK and also panic buys but is it ETH who panic bought or the club?
I mean considering a lot of his purchases have links to ETH i imagine a lot were him yes. Di Maria,Maguire and Ronaldo arent the reason why you cant spend...Antony,Casemiro and Onana on the other hand...

You have to look back in time also, it's been over a decade of poor decisions, they are the reason why we have the likes of Antony in the first place. We haven't suddenly started spending poorly since ETH arrived...

Varane out for a few weeks. Can we please stop buying injury prone players and giving them insane contracts that mean we are effective paying them about £500k/week. Thank god we turned down all those massive offers for Maguire.

When I saw the reports that Utd were now not willing to let Maguire go, I assumed it was just a negotiating tactic and they were just making it clear to Maguire that they won't be paying him £10m+ to leave however this is probably why.

I think somebody on here touched on it when he announced his retirement from international football but it seems like his body is shot and he can't handle playing regularly anymore.
