It's seems to me very clear united have a very restricted buy budget and ETH is working within constraints. The relative level of the squad has been incredibly poor compared to our rivals so he and the murtough are having to choose wisely on who can make an impact now and gradually improve the overall squad.
Hojlund - Immediate need and solution for first 11. Paid big with the prospect of long term.
Mount - Squad depth, relatively cheap in the grand scheme of buys.
Onana - Immediate need, paid the odds and is a long term solution.
Antony - Immediate need for balance on the right - Known quantity and a prospect for ETH
Casemiro - Opportunistic buy to add leadership and experience in an area we had none. He was integral last year to getting us back into the CL.
Martinez - Speaks for himself.
Malacia - Squad depth, relatively cheap and fits ETH philosophy.
This need for suddenly saying ETH will only buy players he's worked with probably has a level of affordability to risk ratio. He knows them and he knows the impact they can have in the short term and with potential long term. So it's about getting bang for buck now under the fiscal conditions the club is working and gradually raising the squad level in line with his philosophy for play.
Pretending it's as simple as united go out and buy X player is just not a reality this club is operating under with ETH and the glazers.
Cucurella and Hojberg are reactionary but within reason of improving the squad depth without too much financial risk. Potentially very sensible buys and personally i'd bet on Cucurella out performing Shaw. Hojbberg could free up Casemiro again and provide balance in the centre. Plenty of midfields have unsung hero's who free up others to do their thing. We don't have one of those at the moment, we have poor CM options who are liabilities on and off the ball.
