He single handedly kept us up because he was allowed to do what he liked under Bruce, once Howe expected him to become a team player his teddy went out of the pram, and he became a 1 in 10/15 player(when he wasn’t injured). Maxi’s problem is teams have sussed him out, so he now spends most games running down blind ally’s and misplacing passes, twisting and turning, then getting the ball taken off him, falling on his arse and then sitting on said arse for another 5 minutes, then rinse and repeat.

Isn’t that Gordon?!
He always looked great and scared the **** out of most defenders. Hated playing vs him. Just doesn’t seem like much of an upgrade in Barnes for a CL club. Why is no one else after him?
 
I would hate to see Maxi go but it could fund 2 more players.

Maxi end product has improved and that’s with him getting double marked most matches. Last season he started off well but was never fit after a nasty injury couple of weeks into the season. He just never got going.

ASM has never got double figures for either assists or goals once for Newcastle, Barnes has done one or the other in his last 4 seasons, I would take Barnes over ASM every day of the week.

To be fair ASM has been in a terrible side prior to last season and then injured/out of favour.

Barnes the opposite, always in a good side until last session so stats would be better.

Still just think it’s a weird replacement, again why is one else after him?
 
Signing players based on other teams interest probably isn't the best idea.

I don't want us to sell Maxi but if he funds Barnes and a couple players elsewhere it's a risk we're going to have to take.

Location and lifestyle 100% plays a part in it. These players WAGs have some say in what they do. Its not going to stop a player going from a smaller club to a much bigger club usually. Its not going to stop a player adding 50% to their salary but all things being roughly equal it probably makes a not insubstantial difference.
