Isn't this just a normal mains plug like you get with any other PSU?

If they don't give you a plug as standard with a PSU these days that's pretty tight :P, or rather if they have to market it as if "you wouldn't normally get one but feel special it's a gift!", then that's hilarious.

I'm not against this, I have no need for another kettle lead. I'm still using a Y-lead from the Windows 98 machine my parents bought when I was 6.

I got one with my Phanteks AMP GH 1000W PSU the other day too, I assumed it was included because there wouldn't be a British cable in the PSU box itself, but there was, albeit it was a 1.5m one rather than 2m.

It's more so that in the box is likely a EU plug, so they send you a UK one separately for free as a 'gift'

Correct, silly EU regulations around this topic for power supplies (and I'm not often anti-EU at all).

Manufacturers must ensure a PSU meets certain efficiency standards to be allowed to ship the product into the EU (even if it lands in the UK). An accepted manor of evidence is simply shipping the device with an EU plug.

Some manufacturers repack them with UK plugs or pay the extra cost per unit if they don't come with the EU plug in the box.

it's a legal requirement also?

Regulation 12(1): Subject to the following provisions of this regulation, no person shall supply, for use in the United Kingdom, any appliance unless it is correctly fitted with a standard plug which—
(a) complies with BS 1363; and
(b) is fitted with a fuse link which conforms to BS 1362 and is rated in accordance with the appliance or any instructions supplied with the appliance.
Regulation 12(2): Paragraph (1) above shall not apply to any appliance which is fitted with a non-standard plug if that plug is used with a conversion plug which, when the appliance is correctly connected to a socket-outlet, enables that appliance to be so connected safely and in such a manner that there is no reasonably foreseeable risk to the user.

I linked grok the product

"Free Gift" Claim: By listing the £4.99 UK power cable as a "free gift," Overclockers UK implies it’s an optional extra, when in fact, providing a BS 1363-compliant cable or adaptor is a legal obligation for a PSU sold with an EU plug or similar. This could be considered misleading under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, as it may deceive consumers into thinking they’re receiving added value when the cable is required by law.

I always find the term free gift jarring. All gifts are free.
apart from when its a legal requirement ;)

OCUK might wanna adjust the wording unless their lawyers already checked it. (not a threat, it's not my job to report anything to trading standards, I'm merely pointing it out)

That's not applicable here as the power cables are detachable (i.e. not fixed plugs) and you can also power them from the likes of IEC C13-C14 cables.

if it comes with an EU plug that doesn;t apply.

Evidence from Reviews: A customer review for a similar product (Super Flower LEADEX III GOLD UP 1300W) on Overclockers UK notes disappointment that the PSU came with a "2-pin European power cord/cable" instead of a UK cable, and the listing did not clearly specify this. This suggests that some Super Flower PSUs may ship with an EU-style IEC C13 cable, making the inclusion of a UK BS 1363 cable or adaptor necessary to meet UK regulations. If Overclockers UK includes the UK cable to comply with this requirement, calling it a "free gift" is inaccurate.

it's possible the actual PSU the op is talking about doesn;t come with an EU connector/plug at all though and in that case it would be a "free gift"

but it would appear higher wattage models do, so why wouldnt the 850watt?
