Sunshine

I dont know about Sunshine. There seem's to be too many "spaceship has gone a bit awry, everyone goes mad" type films out at the moment. I was excited during the first half, but then it turned into a teen horror movie and i lost interest :(

Teen horror movie  I didn't see any 16yr olds in their underwear running away from knife wielding nutters.

Personally I think the change in direction works really well

Great film until the last quarter, imo if he'd dropped the slasher bit, this film would have been a classic sci fi film, I think this film deserves an alternative ending! The music and atmosphere was amazing in the cinema, I'm not watching this one again until I've got a good sound setup going :)

When I watched this at the cinema I thought it was an ok film but as many have said the last third ruins what potentially could have been an awesome film. It seemed like the writers got lazy and just rehashed a tried and trusted ending which didn't fit the rest of the film.

but after a few rewatches the film has grown on me.

For me the movie is still fairly average in the sci-fi horror genre but the sound track makes up for many of the films flaws and the end music sequence is just divine and goes well with the action one of the truely well done bits in the final third of the movie and makes me forget about the 20 minutes that previously proceed before it.

Got this on Blu-Ray the other day and I've been listening to the two commentaries on the disk (one is Danny Boyle and the other is a top dog physicist that they employed to ensure things stay reasonably feasible), both give a really good insight into the film.

Some clever little tricks are used on the film to wow the viewer, for example the colour gradient used for most of the internal scenes are tuned to a blue/grey pallet - effectively to starve the viewer of the colour yellow - making the sun scenes even more powerful!

Well I watched this for the first time just now (after seeing it in the goosebumps thread) and just wow!... For the first half and bits of the second half. The sabotage in the second half really did spoil it for me, taking it down from a 9ish to 7ish though.

They didn't need him, I'm sure they would have been fine just having the trip and some problems. My suggestion, finding the icarus 1, finding the crew dead (like they did), but finding it impossible to send it to the sun, somehow leaving only one person to go it alone on the Icarus 2.

(Probably rubbish but getting most of the best bits of the film without having the silly saboteur).

Anyone else feel a little sad that he didn't kiss Cassie at the end, there was obviously something at least on one side...

Totaly agree, there was a quite aduible "eugh" from me when I found out the ending was simply..

*spoiler*

Some dude went nuts because of some crazy future religeone and sabotaged everything.

It was pretty damn good.

I do wish they went in to a bit more detail though on why the guy from the other ship did it all.

Personally I don't think we need it as such. I took it that he was staring into the sun too much and became mental, starting up the god thing.

What I wondered though is if he sabotaged the heat shield so the others fried or they all did it on purpose.

Definitely one of my fav films, the distress signal from the Icarus give a brilliant sense of isolation and distance, and I really don't think it dips, just awesome.

Having said that I can see how its a Marmite movie, went to flix to see it with a couple of make and I was riveted from the off, they hated it :P

The soundtrack really helps all the way through. Before Tron I hadn't really taken much notice of the music but that and this film really show what music can do to a film.

I was never going to like the last third, I wanted a classic sci-fi ending, not a slasher film. But as has been said, it's a love it or hate it kinda film.

I felt the same way the first time I watched it, the last part was just silly and he wasn't needed.

But when I watched it again, it all sort of fell into place. The things he said just made sense and just fitted the whole film perfectly!

Watch it in a year or so and you'll realise!

I agree about the things he said, some well thought out things, but still, I think it could have been a brilliant slow burner, much like Castaway in space, instead of Event Horizon.:(

I got this on Blu Ray when i first got a player/hd tv. I've only ever watched it the once though.

I really should give it a second viewing, and see if it improves, i agree that the slasher feel towards the end did kind of alienate me on my first and only viewing so far.

The film itself has some fantastic themes/imagery though, and really stands out. It had this real sense of hopelessness and desperation throughout the film. I like how it's not like other hero films, where its 'let's save the world! rock on!.

You just have a bunch of everyday people, that happen to be suitable for this mission, which for all intents and purposes is just a desperate attempt for humanity to survive. Tbh it's basically a film that asks the question of what do you do, and how do you act when you know the inevitable end of the world is coming?

First watched this about a year ago on TV and thoroughly enjoyed it. After recently buying a Panasonic plasma and bluray player I've been building up my BR collection and decided I HAVE to add this!

Aside from the stunning visuals the standout point for this film for me is the soundtrack - perfectly executed and scored. In fact I enjoyed it so much I got the soundtrack as well!

Anybody else notice John Murphy's Adagio in D Minor re-emerging in Kick-Ass?
