Hi i have a problem with Supcom FA

At the moment im running it at 1920x1200 mainly medium one or two settings high and getting a lot of slowdown during late game with only 3 ai's it almost stands still at points on any maps bigger around 20X20.

What is a good FPS in supcom is 30 avg classed as good ?

What can be done to improve the FPS other than toning down the settings ?

Specs are [email protected] with a 8800GTX and 4 gigs of ram

SupCom is all about CPU power - toning down graphics settings probably won't make much difference. I'm surprised your CPU is struggling that badly though. Are you using the SupCom multicore optimizer thingy? That helps a lot.

nope i set all cores in task manager to high prioty, does that optimizer thing make a real differnce is it worth the hassel of finding it and downloading it ?

yes m8 think its called maxcore or something like that, youll find it on the gpgnet forums, but still your cpu shouldnt struggle that badly on 20k maps, ive got a q6600 running stock speeds and can happily play 40k maps with no slowdown and 81k maps with some slowdown, turning down the res does make a difference though.

Core Maximizer.

Great app.

AI's tend to do a big number crunch later into the game, or so it feels like. I'd suggest lower unit cap (kills the fun sometimes) or to play with humans instead, they take less cpu cycles.

Rubbish, turning the gfx quality makes fps shoot up from mid twenties to the high 70's for me... It is true about the cpu power, but saying gfx make no change is just rubbish, as changing the fidelity from high to low boosts the performance dramatically...

Also, I noticed big fps drops, from like 45 to 25, when I hover my mouse over a unit in FA, so that the circles etc are shown, the game has that type of bug unfortunately...

Supcom is heavy on BOTH gpu and cpu...

Having a higher clocked ( dual/quadcore) cpu helps dramatically.
And a faster gpu helps dramatically ( or turning the fidelity on low)...
Found the core maximizer help a little bit, but not too much to brag about.

They need to fix this performance issue in FA as the original was fine, though its doubtful now, they've had ages to make a fix or any patch for that matter but nothings come, its annoying because i can't even play that far through the campaign, have the game sitting in my draw waiting to be played, oh well, by the time i upgrade we may have 8 core cpu's, hope that will be enough... :(

You know, you can reply without branding others opinions as "rubbish". Or do you have no social skills? Probably not.

For your info, I've done a lot of testing with SupCom performance and I found graphics settings made no noticeable difference for the issue the OP mentions. Some, yes, but nothing that counters the performance issues caused by tons of AI units - that's mainly CPU. And that's what the OP was posting about.

Having said all that, I play at a lower resolution than the OP, so maybe that's why I have less of an issue.

Yes sorry, didn't read the OP really well just your post :p.

But the post that it's mainly cpu orientated is just not true in my experience, turning the gfx settings down provided a far bigger boost than a big OC ( 2.13 to 3.2 ghz) on the cpu for me... I haven't had much trouble with performance on 4 player maps with 3 ai's, 1000 unit cap, and all the gfx turned to low... Only issue I see is massive framedrop when I hover over units with the mouse or select them...

Seeing he has a far superior cpu to mine, I highly doubt he is having cpu issues...

No probs :)

All I can say is that I noticed much better performance (with lots of units) when I went from a 2GHz X2 to a 2.9GHz X2 CPU. When I went from my old 7900GS to a 9600GT video card it didn't seem to make any difference in SupCom.

I will prolly soon upgrade to a Q6600 and then try SC:FA a bit more, I'm not expecting too much change tbh but it should help theoretically, and even more if it's more cpu based than I think...

But my post is mainly based on a few things I have observed:
used to have sameish spec as now but 6800GS and not an 8800...
with the 6800gs, high didn't even run properly, medium had terrible lag and low was the only real playable setting for me, performance didn't really deteriorate much during the game ( but it was **** at start so...),
I upgraded to an 8800GTS512, I immediately smacked it on max, and noticed the performance was still poor, iirc only about 20 fps on highest... Dropped to medium and it meant 45 fps mostly dropping to 25 ish mid game... Dropping it to low shoots the fps up ( to the 60-80's iirc, been awhile) and it doesn't drop much later in game, of course it drops by the cpu factor but it's not 'struggling', it's still happily playing at 35+ fps for the remainder of the game...

Unless, I'm suffering from amnesia and just can't recall it as I admit, it's been awhile since I've played SC.

well personally i play supcom quite a bit mainly online but sometimes against ai, when i got my new 4870 i tried to play the game at 2560x1600 againts 7 ai's on 40k map and around 20-25 mins into game when they have lots of tech 1 units as they simply spam out tech 1, then the game was unplayable, so i now play at 1600x1200 same map same ai's and all is fine oh thats with a quad core, graphics does make a big difference but for me graphics isnt what this games all about its the gameplay so i dont mind turning the graphics down.
