Just out of interest: apart from the decrease in performance, what would happen if I ran my car (mapped to 97 RON fuel) on normal 95 RON fuel? i.e. Shell Unleaded instead of V Power?

I don't think it'd do any harm, it'd just be down on power.

I'm not willing to put 95 in mine to find out:D

if you're planning on leaving a car standing for a few months get superunleaded. doesn't gum up like normal unleaded. :)

just off on a total tangent there... :D

I've run my Capri on 95 once (it's still set up for 4-Star) sounded like there was something loose & rattling around under the bonnet at high revs.

I only put a little bit in though as the station i normally used was out of 97, (bloody panic buyers ) and the next one i knew of was about 5 miles away, my fuel level was at the bottom of the red mark and i didn't have a 2nd car back then.

depends if your engine/ecu is smart enough to be able to control the timing (ie knock detection)

think about those jap import cars that have issues due to being made to run on 101 etc

Yeah, I know it'd be ok to put a couple of quid of 95 in mine if I was stranded somewhere without V-Power, no idea about Turbo's etc.

I used to run 95 ron in my old Suzuki swift sport. It was only after about the 20th fill did I bother to read the filling cap where it said to use a minimum of 98ron (super). (this was also stated in the manual).

Tried it on 99ron super from Tescos and it made no difference to either the performance or the fuel economy.

Tim, what does Honda say the civic needs from the factory? (ie whats on the sticker in the fuel filler?)

Doesn't say, or if it does it's in Japanese. Pretty sure it's 101RON though. Closest we've got is V-Power (99 I think).

Some of the American EK9 owners use 93 and 95 RON in theirs :\

i think american octane ratings differ slightly from ours, but i cant remember how.

didnt realise you had a JDM civic... ill have to search on here and find out more

oh... ek9 (just searched google)...one of THOSE. yeah, youll need something pretty special in there to get 116bhp/litre haha

edit: your sig should say "Civic R. The 1.6 one." those in the know will know ;)

Mine isnt JDM, its a Type UK with the Prodrive ECU. Im not thinking about it, was justing wondering what other side effects there could be. Its definitely not worth it for the sake of a few quid :)

Find that hard to believe, I pimp it all the time:o
Look for a thread titled 'white', started by me, but don't bump it.

Back OT though, maybe the American guys use octane booster, i'm sure their Optimax is only 95RON too.

Yank Octane is PON (Pump Octane Number) rather than our Research Octane.

93 PON is pretty much 97 RON. Its a bit of a not issue really.
