Super Solar Storm

If it were to knock out all "sensitive" microchips, which must be the majority surely, that covers 90% of technology!

We'd be entering the dark ages!!

I would assume that the metal case (barring windows) would act as a faraday cage and offer some protection for our PCs. Of course this would have it's limits and would afford little protection against magnetism.

Of course we are protected to a great extent by the atmosphere and our planet's magnetic field. Certainly we would see equipment failures at far less than the 1 in 10 quoted for satellites,

The article mentions:
Such an explosion could trigger black-outs, knock out one in 10 satellites, and disrupt aircraft and GPS systems.

GPS would go down because the satellites are out there in the direct line of fire (protected a little by the magnetic field, but not as much as on our planet's surface). But with redundancy would soon be running again, tho maybe less accurate due to less satellites. The blackouts would be caused by the magnetism inducing massive currents into the grid. Aircraft disruption would be down to the GPS going down and interference to radio and radar.

I think we can be certain that yes it WILL happen, but it's not gonna be as bad as it's made out. Now, back to the map-reading classes :D
