Can anyone explain to me why the SuperDrive eject icon has suddenly materialised on the menu bar on my iMac? I haven't added any drives. Though I have added a new Matias Tactile Pro 3 keyboard which comes with a couple of USB hubs. Can get rid of it easy enough by holding down control and dragging it off the menu bar, just wanted to know why it had suddenly appeared.

Have you connected any USB keys or drives to the hub on the keyboard?

Nope. Which is why I'm surprised it turned up. Plugging any drives into the keyboards hubs doesn't make the icon appear now either and a hard restart hasn't caused it to reappear on boot.

It's probably down to the keyboard, it's just being temperamental now.

I used to use a PPC era menu-ling to do this called Ardiem.

Apple doesn’t show this item by default in Snow Leopard, which led me to try and find a way to enable it. It’s actually fairly easy:

Open a Finder window and go to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras.
Double click on Eject.menu and it should appear instantly in your menu bar.

You can move the menu bar item by holding down the Command key and dragging it around. You can also get rid of it by dragging it off the menu bar, where it’ll vanish in a puff of smoke, just like you’d drag an item off the Dock.

Cheers for that. It must then have appeared when I disconnected the Apple Wireless Keyboard (which has the eject button on the board) as sort of a fail safe incase there was no eject button on the keyboard I intended to use (which there is).
