I've got a Superflower 1000W Platinum running a Sapphire Fury Nitro. The PSU comes with a cable that splits into 2 8-pin PCIE power connectors. I was using this one cable to power the card, but was getting crashes when under load. I've resolved this now by using two separate PCIE power cables for each power connector on the card.

Is it normal for this PSU not to be able to handle the card on a single cable? I also ask because a couple of months ago - just before I bought this card - I had some fizzing/buzzing noises coming from the PSU, which then stopped after a few days. I'm wondering now if something might have gone.

It should easily manage on a single cable, after all, that's what it's designed to do. I have always powered my gpu's off a single cable with no problems. Try taking the original cable out and replacing it with a different single cable to see if it works. That would rule out a fault with the original cable and suggest a probable psu fault. I have to say though that if I heard fizzing/buzzing noises coming from my psu I would have looked for the source of the problem there and then before applying for a RMA and getting it replaced rather than carry on using it.
